The original two versions of the PS3, one came with a 20GB hard drive and the other had a 60GB hard drive. You probably already know, but the new one's are an 80GB and a 40Gb.

I wonder if it were to be possible to stick a bigger hard drive into the PS3.

    Yes...

I purchased a 60GB model that was the original shipping 60GB with the emotion engine and the card readers. I found a online guide telling me how to update the HD.... I also found that Sony has instructions that ship with the PS3 telling you how to upgrade it or replace it.

My PS3 now has a 200GB Hard Drive in it :)

With the DVR functionality coming I figured I would prepare for it :)

Yes Sledge is right, and if you plan on using the DVR functionality coming soon it's an excellent idea to upgrade the hard drive. Gosh didn't know Sony is now actually shipping the units with instructions telling you how to do it ,thought you just had too find a tutorial online, lol.

It's just a laptop hard drive. Not too hard to replace yourself.

Sledge, I thought the DVR functionality was overseas only; you know something I don't about their US plans?

    Not Correct....

I have 10 of the 40GB systems sitting in my office and have played a few PS2 games on them. The problem is the games are now software emulated... So some games may not run right. But from the games I tested (GOW2, FF9 & FF12, GH, GH2) they run fine on the 40GB PS3's :) but the systems are lacking a true Emotion chip :(

And what is an emotion chip?

An Emotion chip is the hardware that runs the Emotion engine, the hardware PS2 engine. It's the difference between the game running on actual PS2 hardware vs the game running on a software-emulated PS2.

I, too, have a 60-gigger with the Emotion engine, but don't play any PS2 games, sadly. :(

I was going to draft a lengthy reply about the emotion chip, but all of the information can be found right here.

So many 40GB PS3's :) This may sound bad, but it really sucked having to unpackage and update and Password protect each one :)
