In order to repair the significant missteps undertaken in the Phenom launch, AMD has bombarded the channel with notifications that the Phenom can be purchased for the price of a lowly X2 CPU. From Planet 3D Now comes word that the 9500, 9600 and 9600 Black Edition (Which is unlocked), are the first up on the chopping block.

According to this message received just before Christmas and without mentioning prices, the Phenom 9500, 9600 and 9600 Black Edition have had their prices dropped to the X2 region. In comparison, the existing top model from AMD, the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ is just around 143 euros.

AMD has bombarded the channel with notifications that the Phenom can be purchased for the price of a lowly X2 CPU
Good move, unless of course, the notification bombardment is not followed by product bombardment.

Minor correction, Sir. It should read, "ist auf Deutsch geschrieben." (throw the main verb to the end)

No one wants a Phenom anyways.

If the retail Phenom prices will be close to X2 prices, I think many people would be very happy to purchase a Phenom, regardless of the clock speed.

Most people who are looking into Phenom are gamers/enthusiasts, and the X2s are pretty much faster.

So if I have a 5000+ right now, on a socket am2 board - would any phenom be worth the upgrade?

Not for gaming, really. It'd be a crapshoot.

    Photoshop would be faster. :(

Extreme multitasking would be faster. Faster, that is, if you could actually keep several intense applications engaged on one PC simultaneously.

Goes with saying also, Folding@Home would see much better production. But then, the SMP core is designed for multi-core.
