For the past two weeks i have had some FUNNY things happening on my computer... program shortcuts go missing or need to be reinstalled, old programs that I KNOW have be uninstalled are appearing again... passwords having to be reentered. :(
Could I get help to identify the cause/s and remove the problems... if they exist?

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please reply to this thread, do not start another.
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

we are currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.
while you are waiting one other thing that can be of good use is an uninstall list so please do the following

    install hijackthis
    • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
    • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

get me the log from hijackthis and the uninstall list
    Gringo

    Hello My#1 Problem...

first we are going to eliminate malware as the possibility of the symptoms you describe after I get you clean then we can explore other possibilities

    : disable M$ defender

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.

    To disable Windows Defender:
    • Open Windows Defender
    • Click Tools
    • Click General Settings
    • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
    • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
    • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

:Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
    • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
    • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • After the new window appears select the View tab.
    • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
    • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
    • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
    • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
: Remove bad HijackThis entries Delete files and folders

I need you to right click on the start button
click on explore and navigate to and delete these files or folders (if present)

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lwinnmdt.exe<---this file

    P2P Warning!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    LimeWire 4.14.12

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur

Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/protection.mspx
    http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
    http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire,, If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

    :Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner:
Order to use it you have to use Internet Explorer.
Go to Kaspersky and click the Accept button at the end of the page.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
    • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
    • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
    • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
    • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
    • Click on "My Computer"
    • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
    • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
    • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
    next post
send me the log from Kaspersky
and a new log from hijackthis

Have completed your requests to the best of my ability and am pleased to finally present my logs. After the third successive day of attempting without interuption- mainly from the 'happy season', patrons of "Rob and Lez's BaR". Ahh... some really tALL stories worthy of recount, if not for the bull**** factor alone, still, such worthy tales... But I digress.
Kaspersky's site took a long time to come up with the goods?? whats the go there? And HjT was updated a week ago Ive been using myuninst.
Anyhow the log files for HJT & Kas will be at the bottom of this.
I've got a few handy tools to prevent an outbreak from LM:

You're Not Here To Get Hacked Or Hack something- git in git oot!!
    DISCONNECT On Quit!
Never DL an .exe, .dll. or some such thing that can run as an app
    or part there of.
Activate the search and destroy mode on any file you share if it has
    an unwanted attachment... blah blah
If you share make sure that's all you share. Computers AIDS= :)NOT

Anyhow three years and no problems yet. My problem may lay closer to home, with utter crap from places like bingo liner, casino cafe, freecell, scrabble and thnx for your subscription to this or that game site...

I thought it'd be great to 'earn money from home'.
The heads up is I can expect heaps more email traffic till they work out its me sending their crap back to them a thousand times over, use their own sh*t back...... that'll fek 'em!!! HE He he.
I noticed that some of the 'bad entries' remain in subsequent HJT scans,

    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://catalogues.cataloguecentral.com.au
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.lovesearch.com.au
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mvp.therock.com.au
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.therock.com.au

there is also entry;#016 with SCRABBLE in it,

    O16 - DPF: {CC450D71-CC90-424C-8638-1F2DBAC87A54} (ArmHelper Control) - file:///C:/Program%20Files/SCRABBLE/Images/armhelper.ocx

I haven't used scrabble for ages and I used myuninst to get rid of it. It should be gone!!!! am i aloud to blow that up?

The other thing is I uninstalled a few old work programs, from CP, I thought if i was going to get any probs i'll get diag boxes saying so.
I have since changed jobs, this new one does not require computer skills. these progs; ROS2006, ACT 9, used sqlserver to operate, i recently stumbled about some docs that said basically, i needed to follow proceedures on uninstalling as sql server may FeRk your system in some way if ya dont... yak, yak, yAK???? dunno!!
Well SH*T I DIDNT 'KEN KNOW THAT at the time!!!
May be that's another thread or FAQ, but I digress here are the logs.
    Rob ;)

    Hello Sweeper

    here are somethings to try

    :fix policies:

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive:
    • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
    • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
    • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
    • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
    • A black box will briefly appear and then close. This will likely stop the Administrative warnings. You can run this as many times as you like.

    :run chkdsk:

    • Got to Start, Run and type cmd and hit Enter
    • When the command window comes up, type: chkdsk c:
    • hit Enter again.
    • Maximize the command window, and wait for the scan to finish.
    • Read the results carefully to see if it says that it found problems with your file system.

IF it has found any problems with your file system,
    • Go To Start, Run and type cmd
    • hit Enter
    • Type this into the command window at the prompt:
        chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
      [*]hit Enter
[*]You will get a message that the volume is locked, and a request to do the repair on Reboot.
      [*]Answer Y
[*]Then type exit to close the Command window.
[*]Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
[*]It will scan again and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.

After it reboots, run the first sequence again (without the /F parameter), and see if it still shows an error.
Tell me what it found originally, and if there was a problem, whether the final sequence showed no errors.
It's possible that the chkdsk c: /F sequence may have to be run on reboot twice to pick up everything.

now lets try to get rid of those 015's

      :disable M$ defender:

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.
      To disable Windows Defender:
      • Open Windows Defender
      • Click Tools
      • Click General Settings
      • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
      • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
      • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

      :Remove bad HijackThis entries:
      • Run HijackThis
      • Click on the Scan button
      • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

        O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mvp.therock.com.au
        O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.therock.com.au

      • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
      • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
      • When completed, close the application.

another log from hijackthis and how are things doing now
are you having the same problems or any new ones

Yike!!!! what TYPE Admin Warnings and then,
You can run this as many times as you like.
      Talk to me, OK!

      * Run Check Disc
      • Read the results carefully to see if it says that it found problems with your file system.
Yes it did find some things, please find the attached jpeg powergrabs of the 1st scan results, there were no problems with removal.
The 2nd F scan reboot was clean.
now lets try to get rid of those 015's
I actually went to the CP internet options menu for trusted sites removed them from there, did the hjt scan, pwned :ninja:them and was able to loose the references in the next scan.

All in all, a successful excercise in compter literacy, i think i passed :)
      What's next? Bring it on!!!!

Anyhow, in my last communique I said i found a problem, it still persists.
Sometimes, though not every time, when I quit, 'eieieio on that farm' seven (ie7), a warning window says it couldn't get a referenced memory from a referenced memory point or file, or something, do I want to debug or end the program.
It may be a glitch with ei7, or more probably, it could be my shut down etiquette , dunno yet.
It isnt happening that frequently that it's worrying me or slowing me down, just a slight frustration that I've missed the last two opportunities to diagnose by not staying alert.
Any suggestions on it being a glitch??

      The HJT log follows:

BTW if i highlight any of the 'safe' entries in the hjt scan for example
      C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe
      C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe
      C:\Program Files\D-Link\Bluetooth Software\bin\btwdins.exe
and click ignore, what will that do, is it OK, what can i safely ignore?
      Cheers:cheers:
      Rob

      Hello My#1 Problem...
BTW if i highlight any of the 'safe' entries in the hjt scan for example
      C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe
      C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe
      C:\Program Files\D-Link\Bluetooth Software\bin\btwdins.exe
and click ignore, what will that do, is it OK, what can i safely ignore?
if you click ignore it will put it in a white list and not show up in the next scan
which can be bad because the analyst needs to see info like if you have an antivirus running
the more info the analyst has the better he can help you
      Hello Sweeper
      sorry about that

I'm going to try one more scan to check if it could be from a relic from an old infection

      FindAWF
Click here to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.
      • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
      • It will open a command prompt and ask you to Press any key to continue.
      • Press 1 and then Enter, and the FindAWF tool will begin scanning your computer for the infected AWF files and the backups the trojan created.
      • It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
      • When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt which will automatically be saved to your desktop or to the same location as FindAWF.exe.
      • Copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.
let me have the log from findAWF

      Hello My#1 Problem...
I think you may just have a rather common problem. It's caused by websites with badly written code, and it's not your fault. IE is likely flagging the bad code in debug mode. That feature is included in IE but most people don't want to use it.
      • open IE
      • go to Tools-->Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab.
      • Check the box to "Disable script debugging".
This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
      • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
      • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
      • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
      • Click OK
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

      Turn On Automatic Updates
      Turn On Automatic Updates
      1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
      2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them
If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.
or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

      antispyware programs
you have a couple of good antispyware programs on this computer but you still can try some of these others to see if you like them also
I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
      • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
      • AVG Anti-Spyware This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
      • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
      • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. These two tools (Ad-Aware & spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
      • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
      • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.
      Consider a custom hosts file
Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

      Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead.
      Maxthon Browser
      Firefox
      Opera
      K-Meleon

Also please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place
Now you have followed my advice - it's time to lodge a complaint against what you have suffered.........
      Malware Complaints
If you were infected .... Stand Up and be Counted.
I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.
