OK, guys and gals i was wondering if any one could lead me in the direction of actual makeing my own firewall!

I dont want it to be too complicated i want it to be a simple script and hope to add to it until its better then windows XP firewall. :) i have the testing programs. Now all i need is to know how to make it.

    Why not check out m0n0wall or Shorewall, or the myriad other highly customizable firewalls out there?

    Why, seriously. I mean there are several extremely good firewalls available like the ones kwitko mentioned. Why would you want to go to the trouble of re-inventing the wheel.

    Are you planning on having this firewall running on the same machine you are trying to firewall? Or on a seperate machine that acts as a pass through device? Hell why am I even bothering. Just go use another available firewall or get a router.

    1) Lean C++
    2) Spend 2 years studying security issues
    3) ...
    4) Sell firewall and make $$

    Making one for fun requires you to be a security professional and a professional programmer. Are you prepared to undertake 8 years of schooling?

    Sounds like a lot of work! Think I need to look into getting a software firewall over XP's firewall.

    IPCop or smoothwall.

    I've used both, currently use IPCop
