Trouble connecting with new computer

This is my first post here on this forum and I was wondering if you guys could help me.

I just got a new computer. I installed the drivers that came with it. My computer cannot open a webpage in a browser (currently using IE due to the lack of opportunity to get firefox). In my server tray (far right side of the taskbar to the left of the clock), the network I'm using is shown as the little computer screens and when I open the status window it says I have WAY more sent packets than received. For example, it currently says 709 sent and 14 received.

There are two computers in my house. The modem is a Westell and it is in my mother's room on the top of her computer. It connects to a Linksys router which then runs an ethernet cable to my mom's computer and one along the outside of our house (the issue is not the ethernet cable running to my room as I've already checked possible damage to it) to my room where it connects to a Belkin router and then continues to my computer. The reason for this setup of the second router is that my mom decided to rearrange my room one day and as a result the ethernet cable coming out of my wall cannot reach my desk anymore, so I used a router (for lack of a better part that connects two male ends of an ethernet cable) to extend the cable to reach my computer.

Can anyone help me understand what the cause of my inability to use the internet to...err...check my email...? '>_>:hiding:

Well, I have very little understanding of your network structure so bust out MS paint and draw me something so I can see what you've got going on.

But it acctually turns out that the issue was the configuration of the belkin router. I fiddled around with the settings and switched from a PPPsomethingwhatever to a Dynamic connection and that fixed it.

I now have a new issue. My sound won't work (and I really want to play stepmania) and i think it is because I need a driver for my "PCI Device."

Do you have any ideas where I could get a download of the driver I need? I looked in device manager and tried "Update Driver" but it didnt do anything...

Sorry for bypassing the "n00bs can't post pics or links" rule as I clearly did both. I'm sure you will pardon me though as I was not spamming. Once again, sorry.

That was a very bad picture. Next time don't use black with purple and red. Try white and black. And that's a very bad laid out network.

...You did tell me to use MS Paint... I suck when it comes to drawing anything. By the way in case you were wondering, that little room labeled RR is a bathroom.

And do you think you could tell me where I could get a driver for this "PCI Device?"

There's a program out there called UNKNOWN DEVICE, and it'll tell you the real name of any unknown device so that you can find the appropriate driver.

I had a similar problem when I installed Vista on my Laptop. I found that if I uninstalled the soundcard then restarted and let windows rediscover it, for whatever reason, when it reinstalled the driver, it worked. Before it would show the "X" over the speaker icon as if it were muted except that it read something like "audio device not present"... I don't remember exactly. I haven't had any problems since, but from what I've read this is a common problem with Vista. Hope that helps....

If your not sure of what is installed on your computer as in hardware or software then try Belarc.com download and install there advisor they have a new updated version for vista. This will even give you your xp key and any other software keys installed via software. If we are talking about onboard cards then Belarc will give you the name of your mainboard and hence a web search will give you names of onboard hardware.Belarc is free of spyware/malware etc due to it has been checked by south wales police force. This is a free programm, you can print the results for future refrence.Maybe try your computers manufacturers website, try there support section, lots of computer sites have free driver downloads.
