My sound device is not being detected by Windows and when I look in Device Manager it tells me I'm missing a driver for a "PCI Device."

Can anyone provide assistance?

What kind of sound card or motherboard do you have?

    I don't believe I have a sound card.

    My motherboard:

    Biostar Mainboard for AMD Processor
    Model: NF520-A2
    Socket AM2/HT 2G
    PCI-Ex16/Dual DDRII-800
    SATA2/RAID

You must have a sound card,do you have speakers connected to the back of your pc?and did sound eminate from them?yes then you have a sound card.Update drive for your sound card.

I think he means its an onboard sound device. Do you have your Motherboard CD handy? If your sound is onboard there should be a driver on the mobo's CD.

Did your sound work before and now windows is freaking out or was it always this way?

here is your sound driver. I'm assuming XP. If you have Vista, let me know.

No. I don't have a sound card. My speakers ARE plugged in (yes the jack is in the correct place) and sound did not emanate (correct spelling) from them.

Advice: <--- That. DON'T GIVE ANY OF IT. Sentences were choppy and if I hadn't taken three years of DUHHH?!?! as my foreign language class in high school I wouldn't have been able to understand your post. Also, next time you feel like impressing your peers on the internet, use words you can spell. Emanate isn't a fitting word for your post anyway. It was some really strange word choice. Finally, CAPS ARE YOUR FRIEND. Use them at the start of each sentence or proper noun.

Sorry for the rant... I had a really bad day (like the kind that makes you go grrrr... (\)_(/) bad day) today. I'm downloading the file that Prime linked me to. Hopefully, it will make my day better. I appreciate the effort, Jelly Bean...*cough*

Ahh... A fellow /b/tard. I actually haven't been on in a while. Is "RON PAUL" a new meme or are you just using cruise control as a means to convey how awesome Ron Paul is (because he really is)?

I think I figured out my problem... I'm running 32 bit windows with a 64 bit processor. Would that render (correct spelling and word choice) certain drivers useless?

Hmm... Yes, it is an onboard sound device. Yes I have the mainboard CD. There was a driver on the CD for sound (manufacturer was Realtek) and I installed it, but It is not deteced.

Yes, my sound did work before, but then I got a new computer (this one). :D

Ron Paul is some new meme. No cruise control here, sir.

All of today's 64 bit CPUs can natively run 32 bit code, so as long as the driver is compatible with the OS and the card you're running, you're in like flint.

However, no, I was not telling you not to post here. Just a bad day... sorry, etc.

All I can say is that I recommend you never jump to conclusions. As far as my hardware goes, I have an onboard sound device, not a sound card. I guess I just felt a little insulted when you offered such a simple explanation because I know a few things about computers and the things you suggested or rather stated were all things I could have deduced on my own. When I posted my predicament here, I was seeking help from people like Prime who know things that I am unaware of. I apologize for my evil rant.

On a sarcastic note, I really like your avatar. You totally shouldn't change it to something else in the next few minutes.

Did Prime's solution solve your problem or not?

Instead of showing us what is under the PCI device....how about what is under the Sound and Audio section of Device Manager.

    Thanks

My first bet is that there are bits and pieces of former sound device drivers lurking in the Registry. Sound drivers can be some of the most problematic device drivers about if not thoroughly cleaned out of a system.

If not already installed, download and install the following free software:

RegXPScrub - run for good measure before and after other drivers cleaning tasks
MyUninstaller - look for any legacy sound drivers and zap them

    It's a new computer but that's a good guess.

    [/edit]
Scratch that. I just checked under Device Manager and I seem to have legacy audio drivers installed. Is this a bad thing? I believe I am supposed to have Realtek drivers for my onboard device.

    [/edit of an /edit]
Couldn't find any Legacy drivers on MyUninstaller, but according to RegScrub, the number of registry errors I had were of Xbox-sized proportions (they were hueg (huge)).

    Problem still not fixed. :(

Well, There's a program out there called UNKNOWN DEVICE. and it'll tell you what the device is just by reading the vendor number and the PCIID. And by the way, 7 is better than 4.

YAD's recommended "Unknown Device" tool should work. And you are correct. Apparently your motherboard has the Realtek ALC861VD sound chip. (that's according to specifications for your Biostar board as shown at Newegg. Please do though, double check exactly what sound chip is on your board.)
You may need to turn off onboard sound in the BIOS before you can clean out old sound drivers.

UNKNOWN DEVICE tells me this about the unknown device:

    -PCI Device [Unknown]
    Chip:Nvidia Corp
    - Detail
    - Chip Vender
    Nvidia Corp
    - Device
    PCI Device
    - OEM Vender
    Biostar Microtech Int'l Corp
    - PnpID
    VEN_10DE&DEV_03F0&SUBSYS_820D1565&REV_A2

What next? I really don't like playing Half Life 2 or Garry's Mod 10 with no sound...

Newegg sells the same model Biostar that you posted above. The board they sell sports the Realtek ALC861VD sound chip. I'm sure that's what's in your system.

    What's next?

    1. Perform the uninstall and registry cleaning that I outlined in a previous post.
    2. Go online, search for the drivers for that device, download them, and install them.

Note: you may need to turn off the sound device in the BIOS before uninstalling existing drivers.

I already have the driver for realtek installed... plus, I cleaned my registry and checked for Legacy drivers in MyUninstaller.

    Sound still doesn't work.

Problem is solved. Oddly enough, the problem was the copy of windows xp I was using because when I installed 64bit Vista, everything is suddenly fine and I didn't even have to install any drivers for sound off the disk. I simply turned on the computer after installing Vista and my sound device was detected just fine.

I am curious though as to what my video card would have to do with it. The answer to your question is nvidia. Everything but the power supply, hard drive and box is Nvidia. HD is WDC and box a pwr supply are Sigma Innovation.
