I do love a juicy rumor fresh out of the oven, and today's is a particularly fine one. Word has it that Microsoft's 2010 release of Windows 7 has actually been moved forward by a whole year for a 2009 release. This is a significant amount of time to push forward an OS, particularly considering the gargantuan development time of Windows Vista.

Microsoft has three landmark code releases scheduled for 2008. Sure enough the first one has been sent out the door for evaluation known as M1 for a motorway in the sunny UK. The Inquirer serves up a few more details after the jump.

2009 doesn't seem that far off :-/ Vista hasn't even really started yet.

Vista = Windows ME with pretty things!!!

My Vista box at work is rock solid. Doesn't crash... doesn't work that well though. Apps hang all the time and my X2 3200 w/ 3 GB of RAM acts like a 2 GHz P4 with 512. :(

Now... I need to continue to convince my facility to skip Vista and wait for Windows 7.

I love how even Bill G has almost blatantly said Vista was a mistake{interview after CES Keynote Address} ... You said it well RADA, Vista never started and QCH2002 you are correct Vista = ME and will definitely be regarded as such by future generations. AERO my A$$!!!! Come on MS MSOS7 better be a real advancement in computer usage, period.

Well, maybe 7 & the next OS will be good, solid applications, sort of like Windows 2000 Pro, and XP Pro were after the ME fiasco.

    ...we can only hope.

When Vista first came out I remember people saying that Vista would be like Win2000..kind of good but still bad, and then Viera (7?) would be like XP..awesomesauce. Now I guess Vista has degenerated enough to be compared with WinME

Nobody ever compared Vista to 2000. 2000 is twice the OS Vista ever will be. I mean that with 75% hyperbole and 25% fact; 2000 is faster, period. Vista is a boat anchor with a dumb name.

Wait for it.... I think I might go Mac TBH! I am falling out of gaming as I don't have the time for it in my spare time (well I do game all day at work :)). I can see me using a Mac for the work stuff I do now...

Microsoft cannot take the risk that the Linux projects will pull their finger out and get some more user friendly systems together instead of dorking around on server-side ideas.
To me, that's the only part of the article that makes the rumor plausible.

2009? Hmm, that's about when I had figured I'd have to move to Vista. Maybe I'm now spared. Come to think of it, this has a lot of parallels with the 98-ME-XP cycle.

I completely agree. Windows 2009, or Windows 7 would be awesome names.
