Mpeg files on desktop show as 0 byte after system crashed

edited February 2008 in Science & Tech
I used Thrax's guides "Repairing Windows XP in 8 commands" to have successfully recovered my pc. But, now my 2 mpeg files earlier saved on the desktop, show 0 byte instead of over 1 GB when created. And when I tried to play them, "invalid format" error message showed. I have tried some ways to recover them but not succeeded at all. (system restore seemed not to be working anymore). Does anyone know how to fix this, please? These 2 files are very important to me!<!-- / message -->

System restore wouldn't even affect them. They're not entered in the registry. Scan the drive for errors, that might either find all of their bits, or do nothing. Never hurts to try.

I'm sorry to say but the files are gone. 0kb indicates a damaged file. It hasn't been soft-deleted (As in the file was complete and intact when someone pressed the delete key) so it can't be recovered with the tools you would normally use for recovery.

Try redownloading them if you downloaded them. The files are destroyed, as Thrax said. If you made them, you might get to remake them.

Poor me! I recorded my grand mother's 80th birthday in the far country land. There's no way I can remake it!!!

If they are that important, you may want to try sending the drive to a professional data recovery company:

I have just brought it to the Data Rescue center and am waiting for their reply. Hope that they will not damage my hard drive as said that it might be while trying to rescue the data!

    Best of luck :)

That service requested almost Usd 65 to rescue that 500MB mpeg file, so I rejected and will try another service center instead.

that's a very good price. :-/ Do they guarantee the work?

In Vietnam, that is expensive. I'll try somewhere else!
