Is my PC Clean

Hi guys
Having been helped before with virus/malware problems and promising to change to a different security method, I have 'bitten the bullet' and removed Norton (hopefully) from my PC and replaced with Comodo Firewall and AVG Free as per your recommendations.

Looking forward to a cleaner machine in the future but would like some advice from you to check everything is OK now. A few days ago computer became very slow. Spybot, Norton didn't detect anything - I also have Spyware Blaster and CCleaner which I also ran. Kaspersky online scan detected 25 viruses! Panda ActiveScan detected 1 tracking cookie. I saved both these scan logs.

I have now installed Comodo and AVG Free and removed all Norton/Symantec products using Add/Remove Programs.

Speed seems to have improved but am a little concerned that the machine is not clean as I haven't done anything (that I'm aware of) to remove them.

    I'd like to see your Kaspersky log.

    Please do a fresh scan as instructed below and post the results back here


    Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Accept

    You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Step 1:

    Please download CCleaner to your Desktop.

    Install and run CCleaner
    • CCleaner and under Options > Advanced > uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
    • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    • To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies. Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
    • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
      • In the Windows Tab:
        • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
        • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
        • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
        • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
        • Clean any others that you choose.
      • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
      • Please UNcheck "Utilities" (i.e., Ad-Aware, ewido and other security program logs.)
    • Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
    • Click exit.
    • Restart the computer.
    Step 2:

    Do a system scan with HijackThis, and check the boxes next to all the entries listed below:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1E8A6170-7264-4D0F-BEAE-D42A53123C75} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {CF40ACC5-E1BB-4AFF-AC72-04C2F616BCA7} -

    Now, close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HiJackThis.

    Step 3:

    I recommend to clean up the Norton AntiVirus quarantine. There is a lot of stuff there.

    Step 4:

    Please disable and re-enable System Restore
    1. Close all open programs.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and select Properties. The System Properties dialog is displayed.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
    5. Click Apply, and when the system asks if you want to turn off System Restore, click Yes.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Scan all hard drives and all files for viruses with your F-Secure Anti-Virus product.
    Enable System Restore again as follows:
    1. Right-click My Computer, and select Properties. The System Properties dialog is displayed.
    2. Click the System Restore tab.
    3. Clear the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
    4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Step 5:

    Your Java is out of date.

    Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.

    Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says "JJava Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.


    After these steps, all should be OK. :)

    Thanks for your help so far. Your Steps 1 & 2 are completed successfully.
    Step 3 - as I had already removed Norton (but obviously not Quarantined files) I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool and ran that. I think it's worked.

    Step 4 completed all OK - no virus found when I ran AVG Free

    Step 5 - Removed all old Java but when trying to install JRE 6 Update I get error message.
    Java Set UP
    Error 1722 - There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected

    I then ran another Kaspersky Online Scan, new results in attached txt file.

    OK, your logs looks good. :)

    JAVA is optional. You can always install it later if you need it.


    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

    For cookies issue, see here

    Next we remove all used tools.

    Please download OTMoveIt2 and save it to desktop.
    • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
    Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt2 attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
    • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
    • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

    Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
    • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
    • Comodo BOCLEAN <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
    • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
      Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
    Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

    The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
