MS says HD-DVD's death won't harm XBOX

On the heels of the sad news that Toshiba is thought to be rolling up the red carpet on HD-DVD comes word that Microsoft doesn't believe such a move will harm the 360. While this pronouncement has Microsoft executives (And shareholders) breathing easy about their console, it's another nail in the HD coffin.

Toshiba has been mired in setbacks, all in rapid sequence as of late, which has effectively killed its chances at promoting the standard further. Meanwhile, the US stock market has actually elevated the price of Toshiba shares for demonstrating the willingness to not go down with a sinking ship.

All told, it looks like Microsoft, one of Toshiba's biggest allies, could not muster any more support for the spec than its standard-bearer. A shame, really.

I have to say I'm neither surprised or upset. I have a 360 but never thought of it as a DVD option. I would be interested to find out how many people think of their gaming station as a multi-purpose/media device? I know it can function as one but even if I got aa PS3 I wouldn't use it as my DVD player either and it's set up to be this mega-muli-functional box.

I think MS has realized that the HD-DVD capability isn't the driving force of people getting an xbox. (not sure it will be for PS3 either) it's a nice add on if you want it but I don't think it will impact the bottom line of the 360 at all.

The PS3 @ ICHQ is definitely our dedicated media player.

I have to go with prime on this one- it's one of the things that makes what would otherwise be just another gaming console ... attractive. I'm actually thinking the other way: Why would I want to pay $400 for something that only plays video games? Or, better still, only video discs?

Actually, the XBox HD-DVD player is really a pretty compelling deal for the money if you have the media. The attractive part about the more expensive PS3 for me is that it ALSO does Folding@Home

With limited attractive gaming titles at the price and judging from the gorgeous playback on an HDTV, I think we will likely buy more movies than games.

The PS3 is an amazing upscaling DVD player. Regular DVDs look almost high-def.

huh...you all have peeked my interest... see maybe I'm "old school" (probably minus the school part) but I've always been a multi-unit owner... honestly I think it has more to do with me never taking games or DVDs out o the player until I put a new one in... (wow that sounds moronic when I write it down but you know.. I'll play the same game for days and days rather than switch the cd out, same with movies..I like all the movies I have so if I'm not in the mood for a specific one I just watch whatever is in there...)

I never bought an external HD drive for my 360.. Guess I'll wait a few more months for the Blue-Ray external for it.
