Can't figure out what sound driver is needed!

edited March 2008 in Science & Tech
Hey everyone
I'm new to this but came across this site looking for help for my mum's PC.
The sound doesn't work. She's got windows XP, Intel pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz, 3.19GHz, 504MB of RAM(which i thought was an odd number).

Re sound in System information>Components>Sound device, the details are:
Name: USB Audio Device
Manufacturer: (Generic USB Audio)
Status: OK

Shouldn't it normally say the actual make? E.G. Nvidia (which is what i have at home)

There are two small boxes on the motherboard with Foxconn written on them and next to that, another small box with the numbers p35-153-11z9.

On another board, there's a bunch of things, including a Conexant MPEG2 A/V encoder, a "WinTV" Pal-B/G-I-D/K-SECAM box thing on it to be able to watch TV on the PC....:rolleyes:Oh and another Conexant chip just with CX25843-23 written on it. The board is made by hauppauge computer works.. So is this the sound card?

I'm guessin that all that needs doing, is installing a driver...but which since i can't even figure out the sound card!:sad2:

Please could you help me figure this out??? thanks a million in advance!

If that can't tell you what you have you might have to go digging around inside again.

    Hi Rapture...
So i did the scan thing.Under multimedia, all it comes up with is USB Audio Device.
Should i be looking under another category? or will i have to dig around again?

PS I've got a pic of the inside of the PC, would that help? but can't post it till i've sent 5 posts(anti-spam thing on icrontic)

Guess Belarc just reads driver information then, I thought it was a little better than that.

Is this computer shop bought or custom built?

Well it's my mum's but i'm pretty sure it's shop bought.

Open Control Panel, open System, select Hardware, click on Device Manager. Now, expand (click on the '+') "Sound, video and game controllers." Please tell us what is listed there. Also, do any of the devices have a disable symbol (red 'X') next to or on them?

    Hi Leonardo :)
The following are listed under "sound, video & game":
    - Audio codecs
    - Legacy Audio Drivers
    - Legacy Video Capture devices
    - media control devices
    - USB Audio device
    - video codecs
There are no disable symbols for any of these, just the usual 'speaker' icon.
However (and I don't know how relevant this is), under "other devices" are listed 'Multimedia video controller' and 'PCI device' but both of these have the yellow question mark next to them.

I have just tried playing something in windows media player and get the following error message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."(Error ID = 0xC00D11BA)
In Music Match I get the following error message: "MMJB Soundcard problem. WaveOut format is not supported"

The yellow question mark next to the devices mean windows doesn't have drivers for it, one of them being your sound card.

Try running this program and see if it's able to find out what kind it is. It's worked great for me in the past.
