AVG Free spamming me.

edited March 2008 in Science & Tech
The last few weeks, AVG free has been popping open a browser window trying to get me to buy their new version of AV software. I want to know WTF they think they are doing by spamming me like this? Do they think that I will buy their new software when they are openly spamming me by opening up browser windows to their AVG 8.0 page? Hell, I didn't buy the last version; I use the free edition. All this does is piss me off in the extreme and I'm about ready to switch over all my machines to something else.:rarr: Hell, I try hard to keep all spyware and such off my machines and here is my AV software acting just like some crap spyware program!:rolleyes2

Anyways, I just had to rant about this **** that AVG is now doing because they really pissed me off.

Besides Avast, who else has some free AV software that is decent? Because I'm about to dump AVG off of my machines becaused they were stupid enough to spam me and act like malware.

Exactly. I'll switch too if the stupid prompts buy their stuff doesn't disappear. They have the right to pop up whatever they want during updates, as it is a free software but still has a EULA, but I also have the right get annoyed and dump them.

Well then, that was sort of a Captain Obvious statement, wasn't it. :D

Odd I've been using the free editions for years and never had that sorta add pop happen. The key is to use the free version and not the limited time trial editions.

I got it too. But only once. I'm definitely using the free version.

I'm using the free version too, not the time limited trial version. And you know, I've recommended AVG Pro in the past for business users but after this, I will recommend it no more.

Thrax, I tried Avira a few years ago but couldn't get it to work properly. Is it hard to get set up?

Sorry, wrong. I've been using the free version, which this is, since about 2001. This pop-up is a new development. On two of machines it has shown up when downloading updates.

It started doing it on my home machine, too. Not my laptop, yet.

I use Freeware AVAST antivirus. It stops trojans dead in their tracks even before they enter your computer from your browser or when you install an exe. It is super and doesn't have popup ads and you can do manual scans thoroughly.
I don't normally promote anything unless I think it is really darn worth it and this one is FREE

Well, I downloaded and installed Avira on one machine; didn't have any problems this time getting it up and running correctly. I'll see what I think of it and if it looks like a keeper, then it will be good bye to AVG because of their spamming ways!

I also have tried Avast too and it's decent, but I liked AVG better. At least until they started acting like malware.

Avira throws a popup after each update.

Well to be honest, I only get the popup when during the update cycle if the browser is open. If it doesn't get worse, maybe that's a fair price for quality, "free" software?

I had it prompt me a while back, seems to have stopped. Or maybe I just don't notice it when it updates @2am.

It's been opening up a FF browser even if there were no instances of FF already open. And this has happened more than once on each computer I've seen this crap on too. I find that totally unacceptable.
