the link to download Hijackthis is broken in the sticky threads. and I dont know anywhere else to download it. Im sorry I know this is a really stupid question and probably annoying. I am just used to downloading it there and its a broken link now...

Im not sure if I can use this thread to see if you can help or if I should start a new one but my computer seems to be running just fine. I was just doing my regular monthly online scan with kaspersky and this file came up Trojan-Downloader.WMA.Wimad.n It was the only threat. I also have nod32 and did a scan. nothing comes up with nod. Im not sure if i should be worried about this or not. I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Seems like your java is outdated, but it is not that old though

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6/05

Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.

Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.

Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
If you have trouble with the update process, please download the latest updates here.
Double-click the mbam-rules.exe file on your desktop and let it update the application.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart. (see extra note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Please copy and paste the entire report in your next reply. :thumbup2:

Extra note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

when you said to click the mbam-rules.exe on my desktop there wasnt one. Was that only if I was having problems downloading the updates? Other than that the scan shows nothing infected..

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:

Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

[*]Click OK
[*]Now under select a target to scan:

SelectMy Computer

[*]This will program will start and scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
[*]Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

[*]Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Is your computer running slow at startup? I notice there are some unnecessarry startup objects that we could disable. Let me know what you want to do next.

ok. I deleted the file weird fishesarpeggi radiohead.mp3 out of my recycle bin also. and of course we could fix thoes unnecessary startup objects. I could always use a faster computer:D

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis

In case you want to have any of these to be enabled later, it can be done.

I also noticed that there was some objects related to your printer ( Brother ). Do you want to disable these aswell? You can print normally without having these running in the background. These are required if you want to send fax and check ink level etc..

Waw. It seems like everything is running faster! Even the Internet. I Would actually like to keep the printer objects because I go through tons of ink and every once in a while send and receve faxes. Thank you so much. I dont think I have ever had the computer run better!

Also I was just wondering what school or university you went to to become a malware expert? did you go to the online malware university? I think I would like to take some classes sometime...

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore.

If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

[*]Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
[*]From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
[*]Click once on the Security tab
[*]Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
[*]Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

[*]Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install AVG Anti-Spyware - Install and download AVG Anti-Spyware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
