Make balloons turn off faster

Is there a way to make the balloons that come up in Windows XP to only appear for a certain amount of time, and then turn off?

I know that you can physically disable them, but I would like them to appear just not for 5 freaking minutes. If they only displayed for about 15 to 30 seconds I would be happy. I tried googling with no success. Anyone know if it's possile?

I think the individual processes generating the balloons determine their duration, not a central "time" set by the OS somewhere. Could be mistaken, but the fact I've been supporting windows 2000 and XP for 6 years and have not come across this, as well as you're turning up zero on the subject in your searches, leads me to believe this is true. If you note that certain items stay 'popped' for longer than others kinda confirms my suspicion. Plus there's malware that generates a balloon that never seems to go away, that tells me it's application based (versus operating system controlled).

You can disable them completely using TweakUI, but that may lead to unintended consequences if you actually wanted to see any of the notifications.

Too bad. It would be nice if the OS controlled it. Then there would be a way to do it i guess. Oh well I guess I'll just live with them on.

I don't think the legitimate Windows balloons are nearly as bad as the stupid advertising balloons at a lot of websites. Those suckers are large and cover significant portions of text.

Yeah, I really hate both types >.< I don't want to be told my firewall is off for 5 minutes before clicking the cross and clicking the wrong part by a mm takes me to the security centre
