Malware suspected!!! It's been over a week...

I posted a few days ago but haven't gotten any responses...My virus started with incessant pop-ups, that eventually went away through one of the many scans...The icon for "Malware Bell 3.2" is in my starter windows, so I know I still have the virus...Can anyone help me get it off my computer???

    Welcome to Icrontic cubanchi,

The starting an extra request only means extra work getting one closed now (I was responding to the original request but saw you had posted this as well). The scans you did suggest some infection activity, so we will need to get some better details first. However, the logs indicate you have two antivirus software with both Norton and AntiVir installed there. You will need to choose one, disable all security software then uninstall the other. If not as is this will cause conflicts and issues, including issues when trying to effect repairs.

Once you have done that, and rebooted after, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Making sure dss.exe is directly on your desktop, go to Start - Run, and copy/paste the following (then press OK):

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

When the DSS Configuration display opens click the "Check All" button (if the "Uncheck All" button shows, click that, then click "Check All"). Next, Under Main Log, uncheck the following:

    System Restore
    Temp Cleanup
    Process Modules

Then under Options, place a check next to the following:

    Backup Registry Hives

Don't make any other changes at this time. Then click the "Scan!" button to start the scan.

Once the scan has completed a textbox will appear - copy/paste those contents back here (main.txt). Also a second text file, extra.txt, will show as minimized in your Task Bar. Maximize/Open this, and copy/paste those contents back here along with the main.txt please. (The logs can also be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder)

You can use extra posts here if needed for that.

Not too much there showing what might be keeping that rogue software aboard, but let's remove what is available on it now.

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer to your desktop.

Then click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator").

Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C, or right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Program Files\MalwareBell
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp

Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window and select Paste. Then click the red MoveIt! button. A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose "Yes".

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Bind]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MalwareBell]

Open Notepad and copy and paste the above text (inside the box) into the text file. Now go to File > Save As and call it fixer.reg. Where it says "Files of Type", select All Files and click on Save. Exit Notepad, double-click on the file and ok the prompt asking if you wish to merge the file with your registry.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

    * Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    * The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
    * The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    * Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply. If it calls for a reboot to complete the repairs do that as well then.

    ============================

Then Still making sure dss.exe is directly on your desktop, go to Start - Run, and copy/paste the following (then press OK):

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

When the DSS Configuration display opens click the "Check All" button. Next, under Main Log, again uncheck the following:

    System Restore
    Temp Cleanup
    Process Modules

Then under Extra Log, uncheck all the boxes except this one:

    Security Center

Don't make any other changes at this time. Then click the "Scan!" button to start the scan.

Once the scan has completed a textbox will appear - copy/paste those contents back here please (main.txt). (The logs can also be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder)

Post that log back here along with the OTMoveIt log and the MBAM log please.

Really good - MBAM had it added to it's database and took out what we would not have seen. A follow up scan to be sure, but right now things are looking good. Any issues?

Go here and run the Kaspersky online scan, and post back the log it creates (it requires IE).

To use the scan, accept the agreement and make sure you allow the ActiveX object to download and install (check the "yellow bar" at the top of IE if needed to allow this). Once the download has completed click Next, then Scan Settings, then make sure the "extended option" is checked (leave all others as they are) and click OK. Then click "My Computer" to begin the scan. Save the Report as a text file and post that back here.

To save it as a text file, still with the page in Internet Explorer, go to the top of the page and select File - Save As... Then make sure in the "Save as type" drop down you change it to "Text File(*.txt)".

Just post that log please, and your feedback if there are any issues we still need to address there.

Hey Thomas...The only thing is that my computer runs a little slower, probably because I have downloaded so much stuff...If the problem with the virus is solved, my last request to you is to help me figure out what to keep and what to get rid of...

And that looks good as well - only normally locked system functions, and one temp IE file to remove (and some infection held harmless in our tool storage folders, which we will clean out shortly). Just navigate to the following hilighted folder and delete the entire folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ZJHFBTKW <

Looking good, so before we clean up what we added there how are things running now?
  • edited April 2008
    Hey Thomas...
The folder wasn't highlighted, so I tried to go under Run on the startup menu...I hit Browse and tried to do it that way, but it stops at 'temp' and I couldn't go further...Did you try to highlight the folder for me so that it would take me directly to it?
  • edited April 2008
Yes, the hilighting is mine to make it stand out. Make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types". Then you can right click Start, left click Explore, use the + symbols to expand the list, and just delete any of those random named folders in the Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder. Be sure all browsers are closed first though, and let me know after how you did.
  • edited April 2008
When I went to delete files, there was no folder that was called temp internet files, so I wasn't sure exactly what to delete...I am sure this is probably the easiest step, I am just not getting it...
  • edited April 2008
Here is the item listed by Kaspersky. In taking a second look I see the reference in it to "regnow" so I am pretty sure it is actually a false positive - a legit item mistaken as infection. Kaspersky has been calling the Regnow downloader MBAM uses a Winfixer infection and has yet to correct that.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ZJHFBTKW\Download_5[1].1.0.272f-5.1.0.272-sdregnow.exe Infected: not-a-virus: Downloader.Win32.WinFixer.fs skipped

You can also right click the Internet Explorer desktop shortcut, select Properties, then empty the temp files there (again with the browser itself closed, or they will not be removed).
  • edited April 2008
    Hey Thomas,
I went to Internet Explorer and right clicked-properties- and deleted all temporary internet files...my computer runs a tad bit slower, but otherwise, all is well...I want to do a clean-up of all the programs not needed on my computer...I heard of a website called Crapcleaner...What do you think about it?
  • edited April 2008
You can use a simpler tool for temp cleaning, by going Here and downloading ATF cleaner. Close all open browsers, then click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If you have them, you can also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.

Customarily cleaning temp storage would be an early-on step for malware removal, but in recent times dong that when certain malwares are involved is not the best choice. if you do opt to use CCleaner, I suggest you just use it's preset cleaning options only. So just install it, then click Run Cleaner, but make no other changes. It has options like a registry analyzer that can provide the means to do some damage to your setup there if the wrong choices are made.

Since our work included installing software, some slowness can possibly be addressed by uninstalling those. Kaspersky and MBAM, if you don't plan to use them again, uninstall through Add/Remove Programs. Though you may opt to keep one for periodic updated scans there.

You can also at this time delete the files/folders of the tools we used. To assist with some of that download OTMoveIt2 and save the file to your desktop. This will help by automatically removing some of the tools we used.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it and click on Cleanup (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator"). When you do this list of malware removal programs will be downloaded from the internet. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so. After the list has downloaded, you'll be asked if you want to begin cleanup process? Select Yes.

OTMoveIt will search for and delete/uninstall all the tools that we have used to fix your problems and all their backup folders and then delete itself when you next reboot. At the end of the run you will receive a prompt to reboot, but save that for the next step resetting Restore.

Then reset the System Restore. To do this, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click the System Restore tab in the window that appears, and check the box that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click Apply.

You will be asked if you are sure, click Yes. This will delete the restore points. Then click OK in the Properties window and reboot your computer.

When your desktop appears, right-click My Computer and select Properties once more. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore..." box and click Apply. OK.

In addition, I like to recommend reviewing the information Here to make sure you stay malware free.

Then as far as infection cleaning and security you should be good to go now.
