Windows Vista Pre and Post SP1 Boot times

Someone asked about performance before and after SP1 on Vista. I decided to install it on my laptop, so I did some comparisons.

Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop
Core2Duo T7500 2.2GHz CPU
2GB DDR2-667 ram (Dual Channel of course)
5400 rpm Hard drive.
8600GT Video card.

Gui boot is set to disabled and I have added numproc=2 to the boot.ini file, these were tips on how to speed up the boot process I found on the net.
No network cable plugged in and wireless was disabled.

Pre-SP1 Install:

37.69 secs from the time the bios post disappeared until Login displayed.
37.40 secs after login until desktop was "usable" meaning that most loading was over.
This second part is pretty subjective, so exact replication may be difficult.

Post-SPI Install:

29.58 secs Post to logon
22.67 secs for a "usable" desktop

Quite a nice improvement, I must say. Repeated tests have proven to be consistent within 2 seconds.

SP1 with 4GB of Ram

27.27 secs Post to Logon
18.76 secs for a "usable" desktop

4GB really makes a difference in Vista.

This is 32-bit and I do see all 4GB in the system properties.

    thanks for the report

It's really nice to have all of you experimenting with Vista so that some day when I actually move over to it, the hard work and tricks will already be documented.

Hopefully Vista SP2 will have all that hard work available for everyone else too. I've just about had it with Vi$ta. :p

Good of you to measure, Eric!

    Nice increases, too!
