Friends building new pc

Hi there,

My friend has recently got into pc gaming and just using his pc alot more and he is going to build a new one.

He thinking of going for

core2quad q6600
4gb ocz 800mhz platinum
8800GT (or 9800GT when its made)
Asus Commando P965
Thermaltake Armour +
liquid cooling (but later on)
Hyper 880w 85% efficiancy PSU

when he has the money hell buy abother graphics card and run it in sli

will all this work together ? from specs it looks like it all will.

    You should think about a higher quality PSU.

    ik thought hyper were a good brand...

    what should he get that will run his system with room for extras?

    Hiper is fine. I have one in my current build and it's rock solid - a few other members use them as well.

    He's recommending a Corsair 750W model. Though IMO both models on this page are a bit overkill in terms of power consumption.

    NiGHTS no fair you type faster than me...........

    corsair CMPSU-750TX atx12v, is what nightwolf posted the link to. I would say that is overkill in this case. Generally you would never need anything over 700W, there are a few cases like 16 harddrives, 2 of the new 9800GTX x2, etc., etc. If that setup is going to stay close to the same I would recommend this(Antec Neo550W).

    || is a PC Power and Cooling PSU 610W. Both of these psu I am using and I sell, only ever had one complaint and it was a friend I think he just didn't really want what I sold him. But any way the important thing is to find a PSU with enough amps to run your video card and everything else, most cards will tell you number of amps you need.

    The only other thing is I would use a more current motherboard than a 965 chipset, like a x38(!!!) or x48. Asus has boards with those chipsets you can also check newegg for some rough product reviews of them and performance. Thats it I believe.

    Why is he wanting this motherboard with an outdated chipset (965)? I would go for a P35-based board from Asus, Gigabyte, or DFI. Maybe X38 if user reviews are good.

    SLI does not work on chipsets from Intel. You get a GX2, go crossfire, or use an NVIDIA chipset.

    P965 is from 2006. P35 or P45 is where it's at now. Props to HiPer for their PSUs.

    ive found one with a nforce chipset and it looks good. hell also stick with that hyper psu.

    The 650i is just as old and out of date as the P965. You either need a P35 w/ GX2 or Crossfire, or a 780i w/ SLI.

    well i don't buy off newegg, I got he was british from the link he put up, its an easy reference and a place to see a lot of personal comments and reviews from different tech levels. Its like the big ref books at the library that you can't take home.

    Yeah that board is fine, since you seem kind of set on using a nVidia chipset. The only thing with Asus using nVidia chipsets is the fact they always put big warnings on the front about using their approved memory list....seems kind of silly but I have seen that be an issue its really the chipset more than Asus's boards. OCZ seems to be working all around with the new nForce 700 series chips. So looks like you have everything fitting now just need to buy it. FYI if you run two-way sli you have to use top and bottom slot and they use a hard sli bridge, PCI-e slot 1 is primary and you are required to use it with one card....poo poo for that.

    Yep, its all easy to imagine but buying it is the hard part...

    hes saving atm, it will be a while till we can get it all, around september time.
    still when the 9800GT comes out itll be a nice pc...
