Interesting. I can see this working on the cassette players that drive the play spindle from a drive gear/belt combo. The belt would allow slippage of the play spindle itself even while the player was in play mode, as the belt would simply slide around the play spindle's pulley. Push the rewind spindle backwards while in Play mode to get the "scratch" from it.

That seems like the simplest way I can think of to accomplish this. Modding the deck to allow independent read head engagement and play spindle motion would be a little more involved, but probably more reliable.

In the dual deck he was using, it appeared that he was modulating the tape selector lever like you'd use a fader. If his tapedeck works like how GH proposed, it'd be the cheapest way to get a DJ-esque equipment setup with one device essentially being his two turntables (fader) and um.. microphone?

Yep. Definitely wouldn't work on a direct-drive deck though; you'd strip the play gears or burn out the play drive motor pretty quickly.

There's probably only a select few decks that this will work with.
