new proc. = slower folding?

I bought a barton 2500+ to replace my old 1700+ hoping to get some quicker folding going. But it seems like it is folding slower now. It takes about Twenty minutes to complete a WU. Does that sound right or is there anything I can do to speed it up??

did you have switches on -advmethod -forceasm also what speed is you cpu at?stock or o/c? it sounds about right what size are the wu, i have a 2500+@2GHz and thats about what im doing. Also you gonna sell that 1700+?i wanna build a dedicated folding box

which client version are you using?(3.24/3.25/4.00)
    which core are you using?(1.51/1.53/1.54)
    which flags?(-advmethods/-forceasm/-forceSSE)
    which protein are you folding?

It all depends on the conditions csimon is asking about.

Yes, indeed. 20 min per WU is most likely NOT a large Gromacs, 20 min per percent is likely a gromacs with a FSB set in BIOS to old FSB settings, or RAM so set, given the new CPU. I also,on two boards, had to flash the BIOS to get the 2500+ properly recognized, then after flash reset FSB properly for both CPU and RAM. I am getting about 9 min per percent of a WU, the biggest gromacs, on 4.00Pre2, and 3.24 stable on same gets about 12 min per WU with equivalent switching (same WU, exactly, for several WUs, and consistent improvement of about 3\4 the time per percentage for Pre2 versus stable). On the Barton, I use -forceasm -advmethods with the 3.24, and -forceasm -forceSSE -advmethods with the version 4 Pre2, which grabbed new core_78s by itself as needed. -forceSSE is not available for the stable 3.24, as said elsewhere, but am figuring not all the newer folks saw that thread so will repeat here. But Pre2 is definitely faster at folding on barton than any stable, and Pre1 is slightly slower than Pre2 also, for same WUs.

amd's and 3.24 had issues ...and perhaps you weren't achieving the SSE boost because of it idunno. 3.25 corrected the amd/SSE boost issue.
I think we need a comparrison between 3.25 and 4.00 w/ comparable flags to know for sure if it is indeed faster.
I have a gut feeling that 4.00 is folding faster with the 1.54 core on amd systems but I think maybe the opposite may be the case for the P4's in the lab ...seems to be a point drop lately.
mmonnin I haven't heard from you in a while! :fold:

All I can say is that I'm using F@H to stress the 1800+/NF7-S system for cooling system testing (see my "My Latest Air Cooling Escapade" thread for details), and I switched to the 4.0 console, and it's folding a LOT faster than it was with the 3.25 GUI.

    really?
you have any references or observations on that or what?
I just finished posting about this in another thread that's why I ask. I have a strong suspission also but nothing to back it up.
And actually I think my p4 lab may be suffering from 4.0beta pre1

No objective data, no. It just seems like it's folding faster @ 2.2GHz now (had to back it down because outside of the tornado and my blowers, nothing else could cool it at 2.56GHz) than it was at 2.4-2.5 earlier.

It could just be a different WU though, too. But it seems like it's faster.

I hear ya ...it does feel faster doesn't it?

just got home from work and checked it out. now I am doing 9 to 11 minutes per percent.

    Folding@Home Client Version 3.1
    FahCore_78.exe
no flags, that I know of. I don't know what they are.

i want to use the -advmethods and -forceSSE on the client 4 pre 2 for folding, how do i enable them?

    ok first of all ...

download either the 3.25 beta or 4.00 beta prerelease 2

put into your current folding folder

    make a shortcut

    stop the client

delete the FaHCore_78.exe (1.54 will download)

set these flags in your shortcut if it looks like this

    restart the client

also ...are you on dialup? if so give the core time to download

bud this is what the flags look like ...use your own path to f@h client

I deleted all other cores (_78 and _65 and _ca) then tried to restart the client, got the pic below. Also how do I turn on the flags? Do I rename the actual file or what??

to set the flags all you do is add them in the startup string as shown above.

your startup string should be different than mine but basically it says something like:

c:\f@h\fah4console.exe -advmethods -forceSSE (simular to the previous pic)

if the core hasn't downloaded yet I can send it to you ...don't worry you haven't messed anything up.

you can rename the file if you want.

stop the client and then make a shortcut ...add the flags to the shortcut path like in the pic.

did it set up a folder and did you have to configure it?
