HJT log help

My internet has been acting up lately and I don't know why. I made a scan with HJT to possibly see what's up. I have here, my log of my most recent scan. When I run the AFT cleaner, I remove more than 2MB every time. I feel that I have a malware somewhere.

Even when I use IE after I clean with AFT, it doesn't show the web page, the same goes when I use Firefox, it cannot display the web page properly or it can't display any page at all(even the yahoo web page).

After about thirty minutes or so the browsers become functional again but some pages need some refreshing before anything appears. I still think there is something fishy.

Please help.

    I would like to add:
Some words are being seen at my browser's status bar when I go to different web pages. Something about transferring data or something...

    pagead.googlesyndication
    contextweb.com
    splashcast.net
    yourminis.com
    doubleclick.net

and others that I can't read because they appear and reapper to fast. I think they are tracking malware, Is there any way of getting rid of them?

Hello, and thank you for your patience.

Now it appears that you have two antivirus programs running simultaneously -- AntiVir and BitDefender. This is not recommendable.

Please remove one and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Looks pretty good.

    Step 1:

Your Java is outdated. Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your Desktop.

Note: Close ALL open browser windows before continue
    • Double-click JavaRa.exe to start the program.
    • Choose English language.
    • Click Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java.
    • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced.
    • Click OK.
    • A logfile will pop up. Please post its contents to here.
Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7

    Step 2:

Please do a scan with Kaspersky

Note: Internet Explorer should be used

    • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
      • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      • Archives
    • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
    • Copy and paste the report into your next reply.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log also.

Please let me know if encountering any problems during the fix.

    Thank you.

Be carefull with Limewire. Most virus problems are caused by these P2P softwares.

Please find and remove these infected files:

    C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\Tamahome\Limewire\hiram.mp3
    C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\Tamahome\Limewire\just fall in love ayako.mp3
    C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\Tamahome\Limewire\precious moment kaede.mp3
    C:\Documents and Settings\admin\My Documents\Tamahome\Limewire\salamat.mp3

And run ATF Cleaner to empty the Recycle Bin.

    Do you use Windows Firewall?
  • edited August 2008
    yes, I use Windows Firewall
  • VekaVeka Finland
    edited August 2008
    Step 1:

We do not recommend the firewall that comes built into Windows. It does not block everything that may try to get in and the entire firewall is written to the registry. Since most malware accesses the registry and can disable the Windows firewall, it is preferable to install one of these third party solutions: Step 2:

Your system is not up to date. A new Service Pack for Windows XP is released (SP3).

Please visit Microsoft Windows Update to update your system.

    Step 3:

Please post a fresh HijackThis log after these steps.
  • edited August 2008
I already updated the new service pack SP3. What firewall would you suggest?
  • VekaVeka Finland
    edited August 2008
For Windows XP, Sunbelt Personal Firewall or maybe Online Armor Free that isn't in the list. I don't have personal experience about Online Armor, but they say it's the best free firewall after Comodo.
  • edited August 2008
I'll choose Comodo since it's PC mag's editor's choice. And here's my latest HJT log.

The log is clean. How is your computer doing?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

    Clean up System Restore

You can find instructions on how to disable and enable System Restore from these guides:

    Disable And Enable System Restore
    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Make Your Internet Explorer More Secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the tools menu and then click on Options
    • Click once on the "Security" tab
    • Click once on the "Internet" icon so it becomes highlighted
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the "Download signed ActiveX" controls to Prompt
      • Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX" controls to Disable
      • Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls" not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
      • Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note that Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser. There are safer (and better) alternatives available like Opera and Firefox.

Keep Your System Up to date

It is imperative that you keep your Windows, Antivirus, and other softwares up to date. Otherwise you are not protected against new threats and your system is vulnerable and unsafe. Update your Antivirus software at least once a week, and visit Microsoft Windows Update site regularly.

    Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware

Additional Utilities and Tips to Enhance Your Safety
    • MVPS Hosts file --- The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
    • Comodo BOCLEAN --- Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
    • Winpatrol --- Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
Get more knowledge about how to protecet your computer and prevent malware issues by reading these short articles:

    Additional Note:

Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

I have this file that's always being blocked by Comodo: svchost.exe
I think it's a malware or something like that. What should I do?

svchost.exe can be a malware, depending its location. Legitimate file is located in SysDir (typically C:\Windows\System32).

    For more information, see these:

Where is it alright for svchost.exe to be?
What is svchost.exe and why Is it running?

Can you provide more information about the file; where it is located?
  • edited August 2008
according to Comodo, it's located in System32. It's still in the traffic list in Comodo.
