After rather lengthy speculation about the intent and direction of Google's Android platform, it appears that the time for its arrival is drawing nigh. As we reported in November of 2007, Google's bold attempt on the mobile market marries a pre-fabbed OS to a convenient API with the hope that the phone's desktop can finally be as open as the computer's.
While Google's yesteryear announcement that they would be providing neither the phone nor the mobile service had quelled some of the fervor, talk of the Android is once against picking up steam. A bevy of announcements on Monday demonstrates that the fledgling idea is preparing to hit the ground running at the end of 2008 as planned. Here is what we know so far:
Deutsche Telekom, parent company to US carrier T-Mobile, has indicated that it will carry Android-equipped phones in its Fall/Winter 2008 lineup.
Famed Windows Mobile phone maker, HTC, has been pegged to develop the first phone for Android. Dubbed the "Dream," the phone recently obtained the FCC's approval for release in the United States.
Lastly, Google has released version 0.9 of the Android SDK to developers. While previous releases have been considered alpha or first-look releases, v0.9 is the first true beta and the first release preparing Android for version 1.0.
Thanks to the FCC's approval of the phone, we've come to know a little more about its capabilities:
All of these feature will be accessible from the Android UI during a Thanksgiving release.
