No Internet...

edited August 2008 in Science & Tech
I dual boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP. I get internet fine one Ubuntu but I can't get internet on XP. I have tried connecting using both the port on my motherboard (integrated network card) and my PCI network card. I have tried repairing both internet connections. I have done internet explorer diagnosis on both and I have shut down multiple times.

I am not running any sort of firewall or anti-virus at the moment. I don't understand what could be preventing me from getting internet access on XP?

    From the CMD prompt.

    ipconfig

    1. Are you getting a number from your router or is it a 169... number?
    2. Can you ping the Default Gateway if you are getting a number?
    3. Can you ping an external ip number such as 209.124.56.70?
    4. Can you ping a named address such as icrontic.com?

If everything pings ok but no browser pages load, try to reset the tcpip settings.
    Manual way with netsh http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Good freeware fixer I use it daily at the shop.

Check the communication settings for your browser and make sure that they are going out through your network and not trying to connect through dial-up or some other type of connection. Also make sure that you don't have any values plugged in for any of the proxy settings and that the proxy is set to auto-detect.

Possible DNS? Is Ubuntu going threw a different DNS server then windows is or are they both default, because the DNS server you're connecting to could be down. Try a different one such as opendns.
