Spyware and Internet Pop-ups ... looking for help.
Hi,
I'm having the same exact trouble listed in the following topic or thread:
http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?p=629994
My PC is loading much slower and I get Internet pop-ups usually dealing with an MS Anti-Virus wanting to scan my PC and other seemingly unrelated sites dealing with "The Biggest Loser" and one called "Spicy or Sweet."
I've tried using Spybot Search & Destroy and Kaspersky Internet Security Suite but they don't find anything. I tried installing SpySweeper, but it would not load on start-up and my PC would freeze so I had to uninstall in Safe Mode.
Can someone help me get rid of this bug?

Please download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
- Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
- By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
- Click on Install.
- It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
- Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
- Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
- Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
- Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
- Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thanks a million for helping me out! You don't know how much I appreciate it!!

Just in the last two days it seems to have got much worse. My PC takes forever to open up windows and I'm getting more pop-ups. I've noticed there are several different pop-ups claiming my PC is infected and wanting to scan it, but I never let them, I just close them.
I think the names were "WXpert Anti-Virus" and "Antivirus 2009."
Plus, the other day I was connected to the internet, left my PC for several minutes and when I got back had like 4 or 5 pop-ups to a site called "The Dumb Test."
Another annoyance is that while typing, a lot of the times, letters are missing. It's like while typing "pop-ups" in the previous paragraph it came out "pp-ots". It's like for those brief key strokes, the system resources were maxed or something and the key strokes didn't register.
One last thing, I don't know if this means anything, but about the time all this trouble started happening, a line appeared above my taskbar that wasn't there before and I can't get rid of it. It almost looks like something is running behind my taskbar.
Here is a pic of what I'm talking about:
I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but thought it might be worth mentioning.
Again, thanks for the help!
It seems you're infected with adware (and maybe something else too).
Step 1:
Please run HijackThis and click Do a system scan only
Check the boxes for the following entries
O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c00FC817 - C:\WINNT\system32\__c00FC817.dat
Click Fix Checked
Step 2:
Please do the following after that
-
- Click Start.
- Open My Computer.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab.
- Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
- Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Click OK
Step 3:Then find and remove this file (if present)
C:\WINNT\system32\__c00FC817.dat
Step 4a:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) to your desktop.
- Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
- Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
Step 4b:The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Please do a scan with Kaspersky
Note: Internet Explorer should be used
Step 5:
Please post the results of the scans (MBAM and Kaspersky).
Icrontic kept timing out on me every time I tried to submit my reply. I got smart though and copied my reply last time!
vekarppe,
I'm sorry it's taken me a while to reply to your post, but I ran into some problems.
I completed steps 1 and 2 that you requested, but when I attempted to complete step 3, I had some weird things happen.
As soon as I opened the C:\WINNT\system32\ folder, the version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 I have running on my PC detected viruses, which is weird because I have run it several times before ever posting to this forum and it never found anything.
It asked me if I wanted to remove the viruses, so I gave it permission.
Here is a photo of the viruses it detected and removed:
After it was done, I saw that __c00FC817.dat was still listed, so I right clicked on it to delete it and Kaspersky IS 2009 detected it as a virus and scanned it, which took about 30 seconds or so.
After the scan, it said a special removal process was needed and I gave it permission to remove it. When it was done, it said that my PC needed to be restarted to complete the process, so I gave it permission to restart my PC.
After my PC restarted, I checked to make sure that __c00FC817.dat was deleted, which it was.
I then completed step 4a and downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, installed it, and ran a full scan. Following is the log file you asked for:

=========================
After that, I attempted to complete step 4b, but ran into trouble. Every time I tried to run the Kaspersky Webscan, every time "Updating database files..." (I think that was the name of it) reached 100%, my PC would shut off and restart on it's own ... like someone pulled the power plug and plugged it back in.
I tried running it like 5 or 6 times and had the same result each time, so I gave up.
Just so you know, I was using IE and I paused the version of KIS 2009 before attempting to run the Webscan version.
I have most of my startup programs disabled so every time my PC restarts, msconfig opens. Out of habit, I check the "Startup" tab every time just to make sure that no new programs are starting up.
After my first incident with trying to run the Kaspersky Webscan, I noticed a program under my "Startup" tab, which is still there.
It's called: dumprep 0 -k
Here is a photo:
I'm not sure what it is, so I thought I'd mention it.
Anyway, since I couldn't run KWS, I decided to run a Kaspersky IS 2009 scan. Before I did, I changed all the settings to run the deepest scan possible. It took 6 hours!!
It didn't detect anything.
Since I wasn't able to run the KWS, I can't give you a log of the results.
Anyway, that's everything that has happened since your last post.
Are we making any progress you think?
At first, dumprep 0 -k is quite harmless. It's used in connection with memory dumps. You can disable it also.
I recommend to use BC's Startup Programs Database to determine unnecessary startup programs.
Now I'd like to hear how is your computer running. Do you still have problems or are they gone? Please let me know.
Please read these guides:
http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30401
http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43902
Sorry about the late reply but I was helping someone with a spyware and virus problem they were having. They had the "Advance Antivirus" problem and I downloaded and used Malwarebyte's Anit-Malware (thanks for letting me know about that!) and it fixed them right up.
I wish mine had been as easy!!! :rolleyes2
I haven't had a chance to use BC's Startup Program Database, but as for my computer ... it's doing a lot better. I haven't had any pop-ups, but my Windows Live Messenger keeps giving me an error message now (it says something about a script and the Windows Live Today thing doesn't pop-up upon logging in) and even though my PC is faster than a week ago, it's not as fast as it was a month ago. It's like there are hiccups, you know what I mean?
Step 1:
You have Coupon Printer for Windows installed.
"CouponBar and Coupon Printer from Coupons, Inc is an adware program that delivers advertisements on your PC."
Please find more information from the links below:
http://www.benedelman.org/news/082807-1.html
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/19/remove-and-uninstall-coupons-couponbar-and-coupon-printer-plugin/
It's just my suggestion that you remove this program using Add/Remove Programs.
Step 2:
Please re-run HijackThis and click Do a system scan only
Check the boxes for the following entries (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c00FC817 - C:\WINNT\system32\__c00FC817.dat
Now click on the Fix Checked button
Step 3:
Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
NOTE: CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
- Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
- Select your language and click OK, then next.
- Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
- Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
- Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
- On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
- If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
- Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
- Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
- Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
- After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
Step 4:deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Please post a fresh HijackThis log once again.
I finally figured out what that line or bar was above my Taskbar. It has to do with "Lock the Taskbar" option when you right click on the Taskbar. I never unlocked it, so I don't know if someone else did or one of the malware programs did.
Plus, I also figured out why IE seemed slower than before. I forgot after I started having all the trouble that I turned up the pop-up blocker all the way to the "High" setting and I also turned on the anti-phishing filter, which really slows down some page loads.
Still, even though my PC is running a lot better, it seems just a little off or a little slower than it used to be. Not a whole lot and I can only tell when running certain programs. I'm realizing it's not really a big deal and it's probably something I'll just have to live with.
Anyway, I completed all the tasks you asked and here is the new HJT log:

Again, thank you so very much for all the help you've given me!! I really appreciate it!
New Service Pack is available, please update your Windows immediately.
Microsoft Windows Update
*******************************
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clean up System Restore
You can find instructions on how to disable and enable System Restore from these guides:
Disable And Enable System Restore
Windows XP System Restore Guide
Make Your Internet Explorer More Secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the tools menu and then click on Options
- Click once on the "Security" tab
- Click once on the "Internet" icon so it becomes highlighted
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the "Download signed ActiveX" controls to Prompt
- Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX" controls to Disable
- Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls" not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
- Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Note that Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser. There are safer (and better) alternatives available like Opera and Firefox.Keep Your System Up to date
It is imperative that you keep your Windows, Antivirus, and other softwares up to date. Otherwise you are not protected against new threats and your system is vulnerable and unsafe. Update your Antivirus software at least once a week, and visit Microsoft Windows Update site regularly.
Install SpywareBlaster

Happy surfing!
Again, thanks so much for all the help and advice!! I wish I could do something for you to show my appreciation. I can't imagine that you sift through log files and such just for the fun of it, so I'm assuming it's because you really want to help other people and I think that should be rewarded and a simple, but sincere "thanks" just seems lacking.
At least that's how I feel.
Anyway, thank you so much!!
The help you received here was free.
