Outpost 2

Any of you ever play Outpost 2? The game is ancient by computer standards... we're talking Win95-era here. But it's one of the best strategy games I've ever played. The UI is simple, but outstanding (very similar to a number of newer interfaces, starcraft in particular), the AI is actually fairly decent, the graphics are awful (as one would expect from a game this old), but it's great fun nevertheless.

AND, it runs flawlessly under XP, even without compatibility mode enabled.

I've been wanting 3 since 2 came out, and that was in 1997. If you can get a copy of 2, get it. It'll be <$10, and I think it's worth it.

Doesn't look that bad, though I think the best RTS still has to be Total Anihillation with the TAUCP units addon pack (adds about another 200 units to each side) and the game is in complete 3D (but still top down view).

NS, I agree that Outpost 2 actually looks just fine. But compared to today's stuff (which an alarming number of people have a tendency to do), it looks awful.

I haven't played Total Anihllation, so I couldn't comment on it.

The terrain on Outpost 2 looks strangely identacle to C&C...

Anyway, I recommend grabbing TA. When you play on a HUGE map with the unit pack, 1 or 2 AI allies, 3 or 4 enemies, it can be amazing. Its actually a game where you can build up a defence that actually DEFENDS. Not to mention trying to manually fly the craft around to avoid the missiles is good (as its 3D you can actually dodge things). Plus the resources don't run out or stay next to nothing like on some games, so it doesn't slow right down either. Not missing out on any type of combat, you have Planes, Ships, Subs, Tanks, Infantry, Hovercraft, Nukes, etc etc. Due to that sometimes it can be super quiet (when enemies are building to an attack) and it can be a bit hectic.... just a few screenies to show. They don't show the best of the game, but it gives you a ROUGH idea...

I think I played this game, it was a sci fi outer space type game huh? My favorite was always Dark Reign, but I got Dark Reign 2 also and that one just sucks. I loved the mobile earthquake generators(can't recall the name of them off hand), but it would self destruct sending out an underground shockwave pretty much destroying anything in it's path. Plus the vortex generator buildings were UBER sweet too, I have yet to see anything like it. After they charge up, you can click anywhere on the map and it will begin a vortex there destroying EVERYTHING in it's area within a couple seconds and lasts like 30 seconds total.

*bump again* Was searching google and saw this so I went ahead and posted...

I'm from a community of people who still actively play Outpost and especially, Outpost 2.

I've really loved this game since it was released in '97. Great, great gameplay.

It's too bad it got poorly rated (due to the single player, which really wasn't that great). Multiplayer is definitely where it's at though.

We probably get at least 1 or 2 new people finding our site a week, most are amazed that people still play this game.

[EDITED by Leonardo] Jason, you need to be an active member here before you invite people away to register at another site. Thanks for your interest and for posting. Hope you will become active at Short-Media.

Is this still the case? If you like RTS games you're really missing out.

RTS has kind of been superseded by 'Spring' a free, open source RTS engine. You can run TA units with it (as long as you have the original game of course) as well of lots of other unit packs. The engine also allows you to zoom all the way out and see the whole map at once, allows for much bigger maps than TA and lets you have full control of the camera (so you can get right down to a units eye view). The single player isn't so hot, I never managed to find a decent AI for it, and it's a lot less polished than the a retail game would be, but it's brilliant for multiplayer :)

I've seen spring, I was impressed by the videos, especially the ones with air units.

Problem is I don't get too much enjoyment out of multiplayer rts, I prefer to spend hours on a battle building up a huge base and giant force then obliterate in one big offensive.

My ideal RTS battle would take place over a few days with lots of save points.

I've had Empire Earth battles go on for over 100 hours in total.

Ah, then TA is probably what you want. I used to play skirmish games and set the computer AI with a massive handicap to give me chance to build masses of defensive structures then watch them throw hundreds of units into the fray and laugh maniacally as the shards of shattered tanks flew all over the screen :)

Jesus, I haven't thought about Mega-lo-mania for years. Used to have that, and Herzog Zwei for my mega-drive (Genesis). I probably played those two games more than any other before or since :)

Yay, there's a meglomania clone for the PC :)

Hah looks good, I never had much luck getting thr DOS version to run so always emulated the mega drive version.

I played it a lot on my amiga 500+ too, I should try again with WinUAE when I get some time.
