USB Optical Drives Power

edited September 2008 in Hardware
Just out of curiousity, is there Optical drives that is powered via USB? like those laptop hard-drives? I'm assuming USB 2.0 wouldn't generate sufficient power to run it but i'm just wondering, maybe it does?

i'm looking for an external DVD-RW and i wonder if such drives exists...

External optical drives require AC wall power. The disk spindle and lasers require too much power for the USB connector alone to handle. To my knowledge, the only external drives that can be powered by USB are some of the 2.5" laptop hard drives. And even then, many of them need a double-connector USB cable for enough power.
