iTunes will not start

Dr. Google is useless.

Apple tech forums are totally useless.

This is a brand new install of XP, and is a mirror of what I had before - nothing unusual, no firewalls, internet security software, or antivirus.

iTunes WILL NOT START.

It starts to load, and taskmgr reports that itunes.exe gets to exactly 14,724K of memory used and then it just hangs there.

I have tried reinstalling, etc. I've tried disabling bonjour, ituneshelper, etc.

I've deleted every single mention of apple on my computer, uninstalled everything, and reinstalled from scratch

Nothing.

Halp.

and you use iTunes for what reason again?...

are you using the new version that came out last night?

would you like an older version?

    is windows firewall on?

    Even the older one failed.

I use itunes because I own hundreds of dollars worth of itunes music :wtf:

I tried 8.0 and the new one that came out today, 8.0.1. I was excited to see 8.0.1 thinking it would solve my problem. NO. Fail. Problem still there.

Try deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file. Should be in the folder above all your music.

Okay now we're on to something. Looks like a DCOM problem?

The server {DC0C2640-1415-4644-875C-6F4D769839BA} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Sure enough, that's the DCOM object for iTunes control. Hmmm. The plot thickens.

I tried Run As --> Administrator and it still didn't launch, so it's not a permissions problem.

Any news on this? I'm having the same problem and it really bugs me.

I however couldn't find errors in my windows logs.

I think it might have to do with something I did in my custom windows install. I built a slipstream windows image and I think I turned off something that iTunes needs. Now I just have to figure out what it is. I'm sure it has to do with DCOM.

    I'll keep this thread updated.

    Welcome to Icrontic :)
    Thanks!

Me too I have a heavily slipstreamed Windows XP sp2 install.. But it troubles me a bit that I didn't find a DCOM warning/error. Did you find it in the application log or system log?

    Hi Primesuspect.

I found a working solution on a dutch forum i visit often (thread: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1284805 )
The solution described in the last post fixed the problem for me.

    In english:
Some nlite installations are missing these files from windows/system32:
    sccbase.dll
    sccsccp.dll
    slbcsp.dll
    slbiop.dll
    slbrccsp.dll
    wmasf.dll
    wmidx.dll
The guy was so helpful to rar these files and upload them here. Unrar into windows/system32 is all I needed to do.
Hope it works for u as well.

AWESOME! That worked! Thank you so much for finding those, andrewf!

Didn't even have to run regsvr32 on them, just copied them into system32 and voila, iTunes fired right up.

    Please stick around! :D

Weird mix of DLLs. Components for Smart Cards, Windows Media Indexer, ASF playback, and cryptography.

the wmsaf.dll and wmidx.dll I already had (Windows media indexing) so I did not replace those.

Perhaps it was the cryptography stuff?

Nope. Songbird has an iTunes plugin that'll handle it exactly the same. It's friggin' fantastic, I adore it.
