Net Framework 3 WON'T Install

Hey.

I am having problems with the net frameworks on my computer. I uninstalled them all earlier today, as I had had constant errors with them. I have managed to successfully install 1.1, 2.0, 2.0 SP1, 2.0 Compact Net SP2, Compact 1.0, Net 1.0 SP3. Everytime I try to install 3.0, or a package or SP for 3.0, it just quits the setup and says there was an error. It doesn't tell me what the error is.

I have:
-Windows XP Professional
-SP3
-2.4GHz
-2GB RAM
-I don't know what version of Windows Installer

Can anyone please help me install these .net frameworks? And, while we are at, could you please help me install the latest Windows Installer?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.:)

I just did a quick google search and came up with http://geekswithblogs.net/timh/archive/2006/11/17/97385.aspx

Although that's helpful I'm sure, why would you not just install .Net 3.5? I'm pretty sure it comes with its own stand alone downloader that doesn't require 3.0.

    Hey.

    Thanks for your reply.

My computer won't install 3.0 or 3.5. Both setups just quit and say they encountered and error and need to close. I have also tried the service packs and redistributable packages for 3 and 3.5, but they all just quit.

I followed that link you posted and followed the instructions. It still didn't work.

I'm thinking that previous uninstalls were not complete. Download and install (freeware) MyUninstaller. Use it to uninstall all the .Net Framework installations, then start the installation process again. This time, do the installation in Safe Mode.

.NET frameworks must be installed in regular mode as the Windows Installer Service is required, and will not start in safe mode.

Ahh, I was testing to see if you'd catch that! Good, now I can report that Thrax continues to be alert, as was hoped. :O

Well, I already have Your Uninstaller registered, so I will use that. I did download the Net Framework tool and cleaned up all my installations, but if you think this will be more efficient then I will go with it.

Well, I have uninstalled the whole lot using Your Uninstaller. I also used the Net Framework Cleanup tool, which removed further entries. I then proceeded to reinstall it all.

I successfully installed 1.0 and its 3 service packs, I also managed to install 2.0 and service pack 1, and the net compact package 2.0 sp1.

Here is when I began having problems. I tried to install the net compact 2.0 sp2. I didn't even get to click on install and it rebooted. It did this 3 times before I gave up. I haven't proceeded any further; I will await your reply to what I should do next.

You should be able to skip over that 2.0 sp and just go straight to 3.5. I had problems at work getting the 3.5 installer working and ended up skipping over all the service patches. Turns out 3.5 includes most of the fixes 2.0 had in SPs

I skipped the SP2 Net Compact 2.0 and moved onto 3.0. It didn't work, so I skipped it and went to 3.5. Again, that didn't work either.

No error report is shown; it just says that it encountered an error and needs to close.

So I went to Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. And bingo there were some errors corresponding to the msi installer and the net frameworks. Basically, the errors said that the description for the Event ID and MSI Installer couldn't be found and that maybe there wasn't enough registry information or there were missing dlls.

Does this help in solving my problem?

I'm not entirely sure what's going on, as I've never had a problem installing .Net before.

Are you certain you're grabbing the installers from MS and installing the full installs? Also, skip over 3.0 entirely, and the 2.0 service packs and just install up through 3.5. It should include everything.

Yeah, I downloaded the installers all from MS. I have unfortunately already installed the 2.0 service packs; should I uninstall them and then try 3.5?

I would give that a shot. From the sounds of it, though, you need Windows Installer 3.0 or greater. My suggestion would be to make sure you have that (3.1 is recommended). If that doesn't work, make sure you don't have the Pre-release versions of .NET.

Let us know how it goes.

Well, I checked out my version of Windows Installer and apparently I have 4.5. Is there any way i can uninstall that and reinstall it to make sure it is working correctly before I proceed?

Also, if I attempt to remove the Service Packs for Net Framework 2 it tells me that it can't because that would affect applications using it. Any ideas?

At this point, your best bet is to restart in safe mode and uninstall them that way. Then try the new installs.

I was unable to uninstall in Safe Mode because the Windows Installer wasn't able to be accessed. I also can't uninstall them in the control panel in my normal user.

    Any ideas?
