MadShrimps got the jump on everyone and is showing off the Thermalright Ultra Extreme 1366 CPU cooler. It looks like a TRUE on steroids. No results as of yet, but we anticipate it'll be top dog on launch day.... Continue reading

I want an X58 and Nehalem board to play with.

With a bit of bracket modification it won't be that difficult to mount any cpu cooler on this new socket.
Yup, I'm reading other places as well to expect a rash of new brackets to mount on Socket 1366 motherboards, so that we can continue using our not-so-inexpensive aftermarket coolers. Leo breathes a substantial sigh of relief. Phew!

Hey hey, I see that Thermalright will now include a fan. Wow, a little less stingy now. Will it be too much to ask for a flat base? (No, I'm not on one of my anti-TRUE rants. IF Thermalright ships the unit with a decent fan and gets over their curved base theory, the TRUE, or it's derivative will be well worth the asking price.)

It will be interesting to see the heat output of the new 1366 processors. I'm hoping that our current CPU heatsinks will be adequate for the job. I'm rather put off with having to procure new heatsinks every time a new platform is released.

I'm with you. Hopefully all most of us will need is a bracket set.

The Ultra 120 Extreme was, according to MadShrimps, designed for quads. I've got a feeling the Nehalem runs just a hair hotter than a Q6600 since they went with their hardest of hardcore designs right out the door. Kinda suggests the lower-end heatsinks on the market today would be inadequate to me.

If my speculation is correct, the up side is we'll get better coolers that should be backwards compatible with existing Intel brackets. That's good news for people who aren't moving to the new socket.

What would be interesting would be to see what voltages are required for 30-40% overclocks. I wonder if those figures start to become closer to each other. You don't need a high end CPU heatsink for idle, normal operation, or even full time at full load. Overclocking or noise reduction require the better coolers.
