I can afford both and I plan on doing gaming with my machine. I noticed the 9600 xt has a faster core speed but the 9800 pro has faster ram speeds. Which would you say is more important? What are your thoughts?

The 9800 Pro is faster because it has 8 pipelines. The 9600XT only has 4.

The most important difference between the cards is something not listed.

There's also the whole memory bandwidth issue. The 9600XT has a 128-bit bus, the 9800 has a 256-bit bus. So, the 9800 has higher memory bandwidth, even though the actual speed is lower.

    Ok then :)

Plus, you could always just overclock above and beyond 9600 XT speeds.:)

The 9600xt, even if overclocked, would not compare to the other radeons with 256 bit, and 8 pipelines. But for the price, it isnt that bad of a card if you cant afford anything else, and want a free hl2
