I have no idea how to tell what is good or not, but I kinda need one... or well desire one:)

I don't want to spend over a grand on it though... and it would be cool to mount it on my ceiling :D Curious what you all think I should look into getting?

How about a good 21" CRT instead? I don't keep up on projectors, but finding a good one for under $1k seems doubtful to me.

Also, the last time I checked, the highest resolution they support is 1024x768 (Eeeeeeeeewwwwww!)

Yeah, I am looking for SOMETHINg to add... but I am looking through several venues ATM...

I am also looking up a good Notebook computer...

Basically, I will EITHER get a Projector, a decent Monitor, or a whole new Laptop(cuase I need one)

Kinda think of it, I need the Laptop more, but it is hard to find a good one for less than $1500

You should be able to get a decent one for just barely under $1500

why are they dso cheap??? I mean, I can build an amazing Laptop that is probably better than my PC and be just over $1500 with a 17" Widescreen LCD, and 2.8GHz P4C

Same reason AMD is so cheap.

    They just are.

I've had mine for a year and a half, and it's great. There is NOTHING wrong with it that I haven't caused myself.

It's got two problems- a broken PCMCIA slot, which is from me forgetting to screw the slot back down onto the motherboard when I took it apart, and a broken RJ-45 jack, which is from me forgetting to unplug the LAN cable before I got up to walk off with the computer.

Nothing has gone wrong with it that hasn't been caused by me.

There are a number of other people around here that have them... I know Enervex has the same one that I do, the 5620, and there are a few other people that have them as well.

    They're excellent machines.

Mine decided to go for a jump 4ft onto the concrete pathment because is was bored. Just a minor crack on the corner of the case, nothing else. Was quite impressed, expecially based on the weight.

You may want to look at - www.sagerforums.com - if you are going with one of the sager laptops. You may also want to check the price of the laptop on Sagers own site too - http://www.sagernotebook.com - Just incase it is cheaper there.

They have fast tech support too, so thats not a problem. Turns out the laptops Sager sell are made by this one company (Clevo) and Sager rebadge them, but they don't seem to mark them up, which is weird. The alienware Area 51-M before the current one was this laptop I have now, but Alienware were buying it off the original manufacturer too and charging more for it. Basically Sager buys the Clevo 5600 and calls it the 56XX, so another thing is wider spread drivers as more companies are making them available.

    Sager NP4780 ULTRA Standard Configuration

That is the one I am looking into, it has a 17inch Widescreen WXVG+ and a 2.8 P4C and other things too. Just under $1700 smacks.

I am 95% sure I am getting this, or something of another configuration. I want my parents help, but my brother is borrowing money from them for dumb things he has done. Plus, the Police screwed my brother, damned corrupt *******s.

Anyways, I can't stress how much this laptop will help me! :D thanks!

I'd recommend the 5680 or 8890 instead. The 4780 doesn't have dual-channel RAM; the 5680 and 8890 do. Also, there's a new model coming in January. I'd wait for that... even if you can't afford it, prices on the other ones will drop.

The new one has a 9700 Pro Mobility, the 17" screen, RAID, etc.

I'll probably wait then, but Dual Channel memory is the only thing Ihave noticed so far that is o much difference between the notebooks.

Ohh yeah, and a good $300 increase in price.

Did I mention that the current notebook with a 17" screen has a SiS chipset? That may or may not be a big thing for you, but for me, SiS baaaaaaaad.

I have used SiS, 3 Motherboards to be exact. No real issues ever came from them, no less than what I have had with ANY other MB.

What is wrong with SiS anyway, I hear alot of **** from you guys on this Forum, but yet, I always see them being one of the top chipsets, and I haven't had anything wrong???

    What's wrong with SiS?
-Every graphics card/chipset they've ever made is total, utter, complete CRAP
-Their chipsets (with a few exceptions) are slow, and at least used to be extremely flaky and unstable.

They're the PC Chips of Chipset/GPU manufacturers... they're dirt cheap, but by and large, they're total crap, IMO.

They make the fastest Athlon64 chipset available, and their SIS735 chipset for the Athlon was the fastest for 7 months, and the SiS645 series (I believe that's the name) held the P4 speed crown for 8 months.

They haven't MADE that many more contemporary system platforms.

They won't have the fastest A64 chipset for long, IMO
    The 735/645 were good.
BUT, the rest of their stuff is basically worthless... the Xabre was a flop, every other SiS graphics chipset is most effective as a graphics decelerator, and their older chipsets were crap.

They may have changed for the better, but I still don't like them. I won't touch a SiS chipset for my machines for the same reason I won't touch a desktop IBM/HGST drive... their history is not good.

Give them both a while longer, and we'll see.

Never had a problem with SiS chipsets either, I think you are just paranoid Geeky.

RWB: Note that these laptops are heavy and are actually deskbooks rather than laptops, i.e. They are made to be desktop replacements and not carried around much, due to 2 things, one you get about an hour battery life on a single battery, and two, they are back breakingly heavy.

The heavier, the better if you ask me. I carrya round a 50lbs. Duffel bag every day for all my books cuase no backpack is big enough. I am sure I can handle a little ol' Lappy ;)

Are these laptops capable of being Overclocked?
  • NecropolisNecropolis Hawarden, Wales Icrontian
    edited December 2003
Laptops are not the greatest overclockers. Think about it this way:

    Overclock= More Heat
    Overclock= More battery power used.

2 things that defeat the object of having the laptop in the first place. The last thing you want is the thing to burn you nuts off then die in the middle of typing something ;D;D;D
