VMware

edited November 2008 in Science & Tech
I currently have VMware 6.0.4 installed on my comp.

However, i downloaded VMware 6.5.0 form this website: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/VMware-Workstation-Download-5341.html

I uninstalled VMware 6.0.4, and tried to install VMware 6.5.0. however it gives me an error stating:

"Setup has detected VMware software running on this machine. Please power off or suspend all virtual machines and close all VMware applications before attempting to install this product."

I didn't have any virtual machines installed on my computer, and i didn't see any VMware applications or processes running in the Task Manager, besides the VMware installer. Installing VMware 6.0.4 works fine, and its just VMware 6.5.0 giving me the problem. I already tried using a better uninstaller (Your Uninstaller 2008!) to uninstall the program, but it still didn't work. Could it be that the setup i downloaded isn't good?

Please help. Thanks

I know for every other VMWare product I use you don't need to uninstall the old one before installing the new one. The new one removes the old one as part of the installation and that way it also migrates the serial keys if it needs to.

Kryyst, i tried what you suggested without any luck. The uninstall process worked, however, the same error

"Setup has detected VMware software running on this machine. Please power off or suspend all virtual machines and close all VMware applications before attempting to install this product."

came up when I was installing the product. Just so you know, I am trying to update VMware workstation pro 6.0.4 to VMware workstation pro 6.5.0. Thanks for all your help thus far.

Well try uninstalling it again then rebooting and then running cccleaner which will go through and truly clean it out by removing registry files etc... Then reboot again.

Check your task manager to make sure there is nothing vmware related running and also go into start>run>services.msc and check to make sure there are no vmware services started and running.

Then I would suggest getting the newest version of vmware from vmware itself and not some other hosting site.

Sorry for the noob question, but am i supposed to cleaan everything that CCleaner finds, or am I supposed to look for registries related to VMware.

Clean everything, it removes all sorts of left over phantom links from old programs that never get removed correctly.

sorry for the late reply. I tried to do what you said, but it didn't work. However, I tried with the installer I downloaded from the host site. I will try with the installer from VMware itself, and tell you the results hopefully by tomorrow

CCleaner is good, but not that good.

Sure it does. It goes through your reg and finds the left over associations that no longer have programs to recognize them as well as removing the traces from all the other places windows likes to add links.
