Got my new nf7-s system in yesterday and i have it setup and running.. But when im installing a program or copying hd to hd the comp will become unresponsive and freeze tight as hell for about 30 secs and it will happen 2 - 3 times during the install, However it does come out of it. Specs are OCZ PC 3500 256MB DDR x2 AXP 2600 Barton (locked :( ) NF7-S v2.0 Radeon 9200 128mb non se.. 80gb WD SE HD

Hmmmpf, thats strange.... Make sure the CD-Rom is in DMA mode and not PIO mode. Might clear up your install problem. I'll let Prime tell you to run memtest ;D

ran memtest and after a few hours of it it still had no errors.. and its not only from the cd;s its also copying hd to hd and doing windows updates..

Make sure your HDDs are on DMA, and that you have the newest version of the nForce2 drivers (3.13).

Hmmmm. What Version Bios and NVidia drivers?

Forgive me for being vague... but I remember having a conversation with Lammypie about behaviour like this on nForce boards, including the NF7, though I haven't experienced it myself. Try disabling all power management features (within reason) in the BIOS and in the OS.

I'll try and get Lammypie to come and be more specific about how he cured his very similar problem. But he did cure it, and I'm sure it had something to do with power management, at least for him anyway.

    Cheers

Just check you've got the latest SATA Bios and drivers. See if that helps. I think the latest SATA Bios is v4.2.27 and the drivers are:

I have my drives hooked up to the SATA controller via adapters, and have no issues. Whilst that doesn't immediately rule that out, it is however improbable.

It still REALLY sounds like a DMA or nForce IDE driver issue to me.

Every processor, be it Thoroughbred or Barton, roughly past week 40 of 2003 seem to be locked.

There seem to be some Thortons, however, that scrambled out of the gate unlocked, and not on the new OPGA design.

Those dirty Mother-F***ers!!! What about 2700's or 2800's? Are they locked?

If they're past week 40 or so, probably.

You guys think im at a high risk of getting a locked cpu if I order one from newegg?

Yeah. But it's nothing a little FSB, good ram, and a good motherboard can't fix. A Barton 2500 on 200MHz FSB is still 2200MHz. At 210MHz, that's up to 2310MHz. It's not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be, unless you're shooting for something in the 230-250MHz FSB range.

Ok. So I shouldnt worry about getting a 2500+?

UDMA5 means DMA is enabled, so that's a start. However I don't know if SATA has DMA modes like PATA does.. I'd have to look into that.

    And yeah. I'm right quick.
