Imaging my Hard Disk for later reinstallation

i want to switch to ubuntu, but i would like to keep an Image of my Hard Disk for later reinstallation if necessary... i'm a newbie to imaging!!!

can someone throw me a quick or brief guide into doing this? I would prefer free tools...

    If you have the space you can use Wubi. It'll download Ubuntu, create a partition and dual boot XP and Ubuntu. If you get tired of it, uninstall Wubi and everything goes back to normal.

    Here are some free imaging and cloning software options(s). I have no experience with any of this and cannot vouch for its effectiveness. I use Acronis for imaging. It's not freeware. What I linked to may be good - I just don't know.

    thanks Black Hawk, Wubi seems great but i don't have broadband... i prefer a clean installation of Ubuntu... although i will look into to Wubi when i'm at my friends place hehe (broadband)
