I have convinced my brother who is a very Intel kind of guy to switch over to AMD. His previous rig is in deep trouble and so he needs a new one. He was originally planning on getting something cheap untill he could build a smoking P4 machine later. So I went to Fry's last weekend and got him an XP2000 (Thorton) and a cheap board that was bundled together for $65.00 along with a stick of cheap DDR. When I got home I checked out the CPU and found it to be unlocked (see this thread) and ended up getting him excited enough to get a better board, better DDR and the works.

Here is what we have for it so far. Please give sugestions on other possibilities but he is trying to keep from spending too much.
  • XP2000 Thorton (will be modded to a Barton and O/C'ed)
  • SLK-900 w/ 92mm Enermax adjustable fan
  • Abit NF7-S
  • Mushkin Level II 3200 twin pack (2x256)
  • Radeon 9700 Pro (not certain which one)
  • Antec True 430
  • He already has an almost new WD 80 Gb SE, optical drives, etc.

Is he going to be overclocking?

To cut costs, why did you go for the pro? Wouldn't it have been better to get a cheaper Rad?

If he's overclocking, dump the 92mm fan. Get a SmartFan 2 instead. The temps will be lower with the SmartFan2.

The Pro only averages $20 more and he didn't want to mess with the mod.

The 900 and that fan are being sold together used so that is why it's that way. I do agree with the TT SF2 being better.

I think I'm going to stop by a local shop and hunt down a thorton. All this talk of them is putting an itch in my wallet.

Must not be too bad if Geeky only suggested a different fan and Thrax had no recomendations! ;)

I'm not sure how necessary the Muskin Level II Pc3200 is. You probably could get by with some xms. The same goes for the Radeon 9700 Pro. If he's looking for something cheap, then why not just pick up a 9600 Pro or Ti4200?

9600 Pro is almost as expensive as the 9700 Pro, and dead slow.

The Ti4200 is now officially a joke. It does ~10k in 3dmark '01se in a 2200 system with a gig of ddr. My overclocked 8500 does ~12k in a similar system.

Hyperx (XMS... ) isn't supposed to be very good for Athlons- the timings are too loose.

XMS not good for athlons? XMS kicked arse with my nf7-s + 2500 setup. Top fsb of 225. Loose timings? Nope. Mine ran 5-2-2-2 @ 220 fsb. Besides all you need for optimal athlon timings is 11-2-2-2 and the memory is rated for 7-2-2-2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with XMS pc3200.

Also, when you speak of the ti4200 being a joke? How is it a joke if it's just for a system that's going to hold him off, until he has more money? Does he really need 16-17K 3Dmarks? Are there any games out right now that he will play that he'll only get 20 fps? The ti4200 is in no way a joke.

He is a hard core gamer and not necessarily looking for cheap (I never said chep, just didn't want to go much if any higher than what was listed) but had a budget that I was able to stay within and he was originally wanting a 9600XT till I convinced him a 9700 Pro was not obsolete, a much better performer and only $15.00 more than the card he wanted (Asus 9600 XT). I also recomended the Level II over the XMS (I have XMS3200LL) and feel the Level II is better. If you checked the Thorton thread you will see that I hit 2500 with it on the stock 12 1/2 multi, default voltage and just raising the fsb to 200 so I know it will get O/C'ed pretty good.

    Bud
I don't think you will do well online for a good Thorton. I lucked out by getting the first one (week 22 on brown substrate) and went back the next day and got a week 43 (new locked chip) then asked if they had more brown ones and she came back with another week 22 chip. :D

I am trying to put it in his contract for helping but he has resisted in the past with his arguement of "wearing it out faster". I alwys reply with "use it or loose it as folding geeps it 'in shape' ".

I suggest you re-read the original post. This is going to be his rig for some time now as I talked him into building a full fledged AMD machine instead of one to hold him off.

Their 3200 and 3500 are both 2/2/2. Their 3200 and 3500 usually do up to 225 at 2/2/2. I don't see the loose timings. :confused2

I could've sworn I heard that the Hyperx wasn't as good as Corsair/Mushkin, but I may be mistaken.

And Al, the Ti4200 is a joke. Even as a "budget" card, it's a joke. It wasn't when it was new, but at this point, it's laughably slow.

He looked at that since he lives in Alaska and was trying to avoid shipping anything heavy but wasn't impressed when he looked at them.
