Hi kong and welcome to Icrontic.

It appears you have used MSConfig to uncheck items from the Startup group. There is nothing wrong with doing so, but I'd like to see now what you have there (particularly if they are related with malwares). Please go and check all items back.

    Step 1:

Please run HijackThis and click Do a system scan only

Place a check next to the following entries

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [brastk] brastk.exe
    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...tup1.0.1.0.cab
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\karna.dat

    Step 2:

    • Please download Random's System Iformation Tool (RSIT) and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open.
    • Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)

I guess I tried so many things before I got to this point I forgot about using msconfig.... sorry about that. I went back and rechecked the items I unchecked, rebooted the system and did another HJT scan. Here it is...

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

    Information:

I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    LimeWire

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

    Step 1:

    Download SDFix to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new Hijack This log

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
      See HERE for help
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I ran the combofix and it prompted me to reboot. Reboot not successful...error: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: sytem32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

Attempting to repair using system recovery disk.

Did you install Recovery Console before running ComboFix?
  • edited November 2008
Yes, I did. It installed just as you had noted. However, when all was installed, I got a message that the computer needed to be rebooted. It was during the reboot that I got the error message about a corrupt or missing pci.sys file. I had executed the combofix program, and it was operating when the screen popped up telling me to reboot.

If you have Recovery Console intalled, there should not be worry. :)

I highly recommend to print out these instructions!

    Please do the following...
    • Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and restart your computer.
    • Click any options that you have to have to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so
    • The "Welcome to Setup" page should appear now.
    • Press R to repair a Windows installation.
    • Press C to start the Recovery Console.
    • Type the number that corresponds to the Windows XP installation that you want, and then press ENTER.
    • Type the local administrator password, and then press ENTER.
NOTE: In some cases, the Administrator password is set to a blank password. In this case, press ENTER.
    • At the Recovery Console prompt, type map, and then press ENTER. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive.
    • Type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER

      expand drive:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\Windows\system32\drivers /y

Where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

      NOTE
: In the preceding command, there is a space between pci.sy_ and c:\Windows\
    • Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.
    • Restart Windows in the usual manner.

What a nightmare! I followed your instructions for the pci.sy_ file, and then followed in turn for other files I was prompted for as they were corrupt or damaged. Expanded pci.sy_ just fine, then expanded isapnp.sys just fine. I have been stuck, however, on ntfs.sys. There is no compressed file (ie. ntfs.sy_ in any i386 directory - either on the laptop or the install cd). I found the full ntfs.sys file in the I386 directory on the compromised laptop, but it will not let me copy the file to the windows\system32\drivers subdirectory ("access denied"). Any ideas?

Hi kong. I did some search with Google and found this:

How to fix "Missing or corrupt NTFS.sys" error in Windows XP

I really hope that will help.

If that fails, you can try to repair your Windows XP

    Please check these out:

    Good luck! :)

ok... i finally completed the repair reinstall. Although windows will now boot it doesn't appear that any of the drivers or programs are loading. If I go to the command prompt and search the directory I'm able to find them, but they don't load. In fact, after startup, my screen is blury and the only icon on the desktop is the recycle bin.

That's shame. I'm just asking, is it possible to do backups and reinstall whole system?
  • edited November 2008
That's about where my mind is right now too. It seems a shame to have to do that with everything still on the system... looks like windows just doesn't know where to find it. I was hoping you would know a better way.
