Folks,

This pc has a ton of stuff running on it. The system is slow to boot and shutdown. Any efficiency tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

try ccleaner... cleans all temp files from your system! it can also fix registry issues

can you post your machine spec, and what OS and softwares installed on it? Alot of programs can install itself into the autostart tray which will also slow bootup time...

i agree with CB... defrag will certainly help, when was the last time you defrag?

Unfortunately defragging does not do much of anything on Windows XP thanks to NTFS. It can capably keep track of files regardless of their location on the drive.

It's not an issue of keeping track, it's an issue of access speed. It doesn't matter what your OS is: if your files are in hundreds of little pieces all over the surface of the disk, instead of in neatly ordered, they will take longer to access. If fragmentation gets bad enough, it will slow down the PC during times of heavy HD access, like booting and shutting down.

Also: It can't hurt to try.

CB, it's been proven that defragmentation of the NTFS file system offers negligible performance gains, especially with today's high-speed drives. It made sense years ago when drives were slower and people used primarily FAT and FAT32 file systems.

Regardless, let's fix the OP's issue.

DMM, have you posted a HijackThis log?
