Pop-Ups are Eating my Computer Alive!!!

I'm having a big problem with pop-ups, which are preventing me from doing anything useful online anymore. I run FireFox, and although I do get the occasional FF pop-up every great once and a while, the majority of my pop-ups are from Internet Explorer.

The pop-ups are usually something like Zedo or Nexplore, but can be as random as SmacChat or some YouTube video of Howie Mandel.

It's usually just an occasional pop-up or two every few minutes, but more and more often I get floods of 40 or more. Not knowing what to do, I usually just start closing out of them as fast as I can, and after a few minutes they just kind of all close out at once.

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated, as I now view my computer as Satan, and would love to mend my relationship with it ASAP.

Heres My HijackThis log, thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi, welcome to Icrontic.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:
    1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

    C:\ComboFix.txt
    New HijackThis log.

    Hey, thanks for the help.

Ran the ComboFix as close as I could to the instructions, didn't go exactly as it said. For instance, it told me the recover console was installed, then said it couldn't detect a console. Once all the processes were finished and it was getting ready to reboot, an error message popped up. I ran for paper and pencil to write down the file that caused the error, but it rebooted before I could get anywhere. And after it rebooted, saying not to open any programs untill the log was complete, my MSN messenger kind of autoloaded, but I doubt that did anything.

Anyways, encountered 2 or three pop-ups while coming here to reply, so obviously it's not completly fixed, but at least we're making progress.

    Heres, my ComboFix log

    Looks much better.

It appears that you have LimeWire installed on your computer.

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall LimeWire.

You must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

    Step 1:

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
    Folder::
    c:\temp\tn3
    C:\VundoFix Backups

    File::
    c:\windows\SYSTEM32\vbzip10.dll
    c:\eied_s7.cab
    c:\ex.cab

Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

    CFScriptb.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.

ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Yeah, I wish I had never tried a P2P in the first place. I'm 90% sure that it's caused 90% of the problem. If it means a clean computer, glad to get rid of it. Here's my new ComboFix log.

Hi. There is a suspicious file we need to have scanned by uploading them to VirusTotal.

    Plead go to VirusTotal.

Copy and paste the following file path into the Search Box in the middle of the page:

    c:\windows\system32\drivers\vpctcomm.sys

Now click on the Send File button.

NOTE: If you come to the "File has already been analysed:" page, select "Reanalyse file now" to get a fresh scan.

Save a copy of the Anti-Virus results only. Post the results in your next reply.

I guess I'm confused with what you want me to do, because it's not really doing anything.

I'm not sure if I should run it with my virus protection off or on.

Either way, when I run the file, all it does is take me to a page that says
0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

The infection you have prevents uploading. Let's kick its ass.

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
    Driver::
    vpctcomm

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk

Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

    CFScriptb.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.

ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

    • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mshlpa.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\default\Desktop\Downloads\Setup.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

    CFScriptb.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.

ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

    Looks good.

    Step 1:

    Let's uinstall ComboFix:
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

      CF_Cleanup.png
    • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

    Step 2:

Click here to download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button and then Exit.
    Step 3:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

    Clean up System Restore

You can find instructions on how to disable and enable System Restore from these guides:

    Disable And Enable System Restore
    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Make Your Internet Explorer More Secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the tools menu and then click on Options
    • Click once on the "Security" tab
    • Click once on the "Internet" icon so it becomes highlighted
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the "Download signed ActiveX" controls to Prompt
      • Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX" controls to Disable
      • Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls" not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
      • Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Note that Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser. There are safer (and better) alternatives available like Opera and Firefox.

Keep Your System Up to date

It is imperative that you keep your Windows, Antivirus, and other softwares up to date. Otherwise you are not protected against new threats and your system is vulnerable and unsafe. Update your Antivirus software at least once a week, and visit Microsoft Windows Update site regularly.

    Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware

Additional Utilities and Tips to Enhance Your Safety
    • MVPS Hosts file --- The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
    • Comodo BOCLEAN --- Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
    • Winpatrol --- Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
