Vista machine dropping internet

Help,
I have virtualy no vista experience, so bare with me please.
My mother in-law's Vista pc is fairly new, She has several issues with her internet connectivity. She is hooked up to a DSL wired combo router/modem.
When her PC boots up it takes about 5 minutes for her connection to "engage". She looses the internet connection seemingly randomly and sometimes it takes an hour to get it back, and some times less then 5 minutes. There are several other commputers on the same router. 1 XP two others w/ Vista, and they don't have this issue. I updated her network adapter w/ the latest driver from MS. no help so far. Any ideas?
