One thing that may take the SSD market into the mainstream is the glut of flash memory worldwide. There's actually much excess production capability, and much excess in production. Production outstripped demand months ago in nearly all categories of memory. Manufactures can't just shut down the fabs. For the most part, they have to keep them running. In the case of DRAM, much of it is being sold under manufacturing/distribution costs.
