I am still talking with my peers about this problem.

I just wanted to find out specifically which programs have the broken thumbnails. For example, what program was that jpg from? Does this happen in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. What other windows programs are effected?

edit: I can see now that the thumbnail was from Sony Creative

    Hi,

So far I've noticed it only on Windows programs. There are no broken images in FF or IE. It happens on programs installed in Windows and their help files.

    For example,
    Yahoo Messenger (no emoticons, smilies)
    MSN Windows Messenger (same)

    Help files for:
    Sony Creative
    Wordpad
    Windows Movie Maker
    Macromedia - Fireworks, Dreamweaver Flash

    etc.

We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
    1. Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
    2. Extract the zip file to your desktop.
    3. Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
    4. Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: checkmark.png)
    5. UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section. The prep section should then look like this:
      toUncheck.png
    6. When the window looks like this, press the GO button in the bottom of the window.
      mainWindow.png
    7. Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

Please let me know if this resolves the issue.

    Hi,

I followed your instructions, downloaded and executed the program.

Checked Wordpad .. help file and then Yahoo messenger. No change the images are still broken.

Do you think a full re-install of XP will solve this problem? I'd rather not do a re-install as I've got most of everything back to the way it was before the virsus attack but if I have to then I will consider it as an option.

Please let me know. Thx for all your assistance with this.

There are three ways to proceed... reinstalling XP is a last resort.

First, reboot your computer if you have not already done so. Then check once again if the problem still persists.

If you are still not seeing the images in your programs, please try the following:

    System File Checker

Go to Start > Run, enter sfc /scannow ( note the space between the "c" and "/" ) and click on OK.

This will look for and attempt to replace any corrupt system files that can be found. There are backups of some of these files on your PC and Windows will check for a copy here first. If you are prompted to insert your Windows XP disc, do so. If you don't have this disc and are asked for it, you will have to cancel at this point. Let me know if you have any problems with this procedure.

Do not use your computer while sfc is running.

If it replaces any files, then when it has finished, you will need to go to windows update and check for any updates.

Let me know how you get on and if the problem still exists.

    Hi,

Sorry to have replied yesterday but I was not at my PC.

I ran the scannow as you suggested. It asked me for the XP Home Edition CD rom.

I do not have the disk as the Windows was already pre-installed on my PC with no disk provided by the seller of the PC. I have my serial number of Windows etc. as per paperwork but no CD rom.

So, how can I proceed with replacing the missing files in the DLL cache as it stated?

Would this be of any help?

It is evident that since the repairs for the virus attack, some files have been removed or no longer available.

    Please let me know. Thx

    Hi,

There are workarounds to make sfc work without the Windows Installation CD. Rather than trying to assist you with that myself, I think it would be best to direct you to a General Computer Troubleshooting Forum. The helpers there are more experienced in these matters than I am.

    Good Luck.
