Thank you for posting that. I've been searching for a new AV for a while. AVG seemed to be going through a stage of mediocrity, so I switched to Avira. I didn't like the user interface and seemingly narrow user-set options. I've been using Avast now for a while, but am really fed up with the false positives. In the PDF you linked, I noted that those testers showed Avast to have a comparatively high false positive detection rate.

NOD32 looks very good, but I'm not ready to purchase AV software, just to watch it completely change its rankings in the next big expert reviews. The only free NOD32 I found was 'free' 30-day trialware. Obviously, a software maker is not obligated to share their work for free with anyone, but I've been on the free bandwagon now for years and don't wish to change at this point. Hmm, maybe it's time to give Avira another chance? I noticed they scored well in both new virus detection and in accurate existing virus detections/low false positives.

They were selling NOD32 1-year subscriptions for $9.99 CDN near my home. Pretty close to free for me. :] <3 NOD32 and wish them continued success!

Considering the purported quality of it, I'd say that's a very reasonable price.

I've reinstalled Avira AntiVir on a couple computers. Hey, I don't know where my comments about its interface and user options above came from! Maybe this is a much improved version from before, or maybe before I just didn't spend enough time getting familiar with it. This current version is very nice, with many options.

    Leo,
Is it that much better than AVG? I've used it for a while and it's been good to me.

Is which one better than AVG? Avira? It appears to be. That's based on reviews on the internet. I hadn't had any problems with AVG on my computers, but had thought I would try something new.

I've heard quite a few good things about NOD32 as well. I've been using AVG Free for some time, but I think I may give NOD a try.

I've been using NOD32 for the past few months and i must say that its impressive. As is the case with most AV solutions, you cant really expect any updated AV solution to completely clean up and reverse the effects of a really bad infection. As is said, prevention is better than cure and so is the case with an application like NOD32 that can detects 99% of the malware out there. With such security at your disposal, you can be rest assured of safer browsing and hassle free file sharing. My take, go for it, light on system resources, extremely good detection rates. What else could you possibly ask for?

NOD32 also runs in safe mode, which is a big plus for cleaning crap out of your system.

Light bulb suddenly goes on. I hadn't ever thought of that. Good point, really good point. I ought to try that with Avira. I have no idea from personal experience which AV software offerings are better than others with respect to accurate, up-to-date definitions. I'll leave that to the pros who review the software. What I do know though, is tendancy towards false positives. Of all the AVs I've used so far - Norton, Avast, PC-Cillin, AVG, and now Avira, I'd have to say Avira is very, very good. I have not tried NOD32.

NOD32 is pretty damn pro. If I was going to pay for antivirus, it would be the only one that would get my money.
