Next years items.
Ok some of us (ME!!) are going to be retiring our old systems next year sometime. And my question is what is coming out next year that would be of intrest and when it comes out and a rough estimates of prices and maybe a little information on the piece of hardware?
E.G.
What about the newer AMD processors that are meant to be coming out sometime in spring, and will the NForce series of boards be out by then???
Graphics cards?
Ram
Nuclear powered zippo rays of death and destruction?

Q2 of 2005
guess you'll have to wait...:-/
AMD
-continuing FX as top producer/top price unlocked model
-migrating socket 754 (Athlon64) to socket 939
-Newcastle is the chip most of us will move to if going AMD, socket 939 with half the L2 cache (512) of the top of the line models, dual channel memory, onboard memory controller
-staying with DDR memory for the moment
-no idea on pricing yet
-NForce3 motherboards are already out there, supporting Athlon64 and (I think) Opteron (server version of A64) processors
Intel
-rolling out Prescott in February, initially on socket 478 though with limited support as not all S478 mobos support the power standard requirements
-Prescott initially to be as high as 3.4GHz, as low as (??) 2.6 or 2.8 and going another step to 533 (133X4) bus speeds, processors on 533 will have very high multipliers and might just be the enthusiast's choice for overclocking due to a low fsb starting point.
-Socket 775 later in the year (end Q2?), Prescott continues to be ramped up but only for S775 @ 3.6 & higher
-S775 will (?) use DDRII, no idea if will also support DDR
-new socket/bus for video cards
-similar to 865/875, Intel will be making multiple versions of the chipset, for value and high end users
-speculation on initial pricing is out there. I believe TheInquirer has a roadmap with intro pricing schedule, per 1000 units
Some of the above is fact and some is speculation and rumour, of which there is lots 'out there' at this point
The San Diego core for the A64 FX line is coming in H2 of 04, and if you're going to see DDR2 on the IMC, that's the chip it's going to be on. It'll also feature a 90nm fab from possibly their new fab in Dresden, if it gets done in time... Which it probably will. Toledo, seen in H1-05 will be the next step in this. The San Diego will probably be cheap, very fast, low-heat, and a good overclocker. This will probably be S939.
Not much is known in the way of chipset roadmaps from the AMD camp, but expect to see GbE become rather common, as well as improvements on motherboard design, overclockability, and the general addition of features like good integrated sound. The removal of the memory controller from the motherboard's list of duties leaves little left to be developed for mobos as far as I can see. Expect VIA to produce one or two refreshes of the K8T800 line, and the nForce3 to receive its single planned upgrade to introduce a better sound codec, locked AGP/PCI, and GbE, as well as a new SATA controller.
SiS needs to get on the ball with their SiS755/FX chipset.. As it kicks the crap out of all the other chipsets. Watch for this one to get up a head of steam.
DDR2 is backwards compatible with DDR slots, so expect to be able to use your old memory if you don't want to make the immediate leap to DDR2 when it arrives. Pending your motherboard having a DDR2 controller.
As far as the Intel camp is concerned.. You'll all have to make due with the S478 until LATE in H1 of '04 when they introduce LGA775, and then don't expect Tejas (The REAL successor to the p4) until late 04, or early 05. It should've come H1 of 04, but the Prescott pushed it off considerably.
The Yamhill, Intel's X86-64 chip has been confirmed, so we might see something in regards to this too!
Chipsets from Intel will include the Grantsdale-G, which is THE chipset to get with the Prescott (This chipset will later be introduced as LGA755 also).
2004 might see the Alderwood and Lakeport from Intel, which go with the Tejas.
Both camps will see DDR2, PCI express, and possibly BTX.
Good day!
So what avout graphics cards? im probably going to upgrade when the next gen of graphics cards come out. any ideas about them?
Hopefully it won't be long till that day comes.
They're using AMD's 64 bit standard? Ahahahaha....
