On my other laptop, I tried doing a new install of xp, but when it rebooted, I get a black screen, and it gives me the option of safe mode, and the other stuff. But nother works and then when I choose, start normal, I get the message that windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupted. I tried putting the xp cd back in laptop and changed the boot order to start on cd but it won't. Please help, cant do anything on that laptop.
Thanks

"Tried" implies that the XP installation failed. Did you actually start the installation process? If so, how far did you get. At this point it's unclear what steps you took.

It went through the install, and when it restarted the laptop is when this whole thing happened.

Out of curiosity, how long did the install take? Did the install reformat the drive? Did the install restart the comp at least twice?

Please provide as much detail as to what you did as possible.

It went through the whole install/copying files then it went to the window where it saids that the laptop will now restart. It started to reboot, then the black screen came on and I've been stuck there ever since. I tried to boot in safe mode but it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\drivers\agpCPQ.sys

The same thing happens when I try to boot into safe mode with networking.

And when I tried to boot "Start Windows Normally", it freezes.

And when I try to boot from last known good configuration, it saids that windows can't start because windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt

Alright, that's useful information. Your computer did NOT complete the installation. The first restart is only about halfway through the process.

I tried putting the cd back in but it won't boot from cd. I went into bios and set the boot order so cd is first but still, it won't read.

If you watch the screen carefully, does it say anything about press any key to boot from CD? It can be easy to miss if you are not watching the process closely as the option to boot from CD only lasts for 5 seconds. If this is the case the install may continue if you get it to boot from CD.

Safe Mode will give you nothing as there is no install of XP on the hard drive yet.

When your laptop starts you can try the boot menu option instead of changing it in the bios. Make sure you have the install disc in the machine when you start as it is still needed.

    OR
If this was a fresh install of XP where you DO NOT HAVE DATA TO LOOSE OR DO NOT CARE IF YOU LOOSE DATA then you could try to reformat the hard drive and try from the beginning.

I also tried setting the boot order from the boot menu and it still doesn't read cd. If there is a way I can reformat and start over again, I do it. But I'm not sure how if the laptop won't read cd or flash drive. Any ideas
