Found out why one of my desktops was freezing- you'll never believe this.

I disassembled my print server last week to put some sound deadening material in it, and in the process, I solved a problem it had been having recently.

It's got a 1.3GHz celeron, clocked @ 1.5GHz; Since I'd switched to F@H v4, it would freeze a few minutes into the program for no apparent reason.

If I clocked it down to 1.3GHz, however, it worked fine. So, I figured it was just an issue of F@H4 being more taxing, and didn't give it another thought.

My print server is in an Antec SLK-3700AMB case, which has been modified with two 80mm blowholes. Rather than use the normal fan screws, I used machine screws and wing nuts to hold the fans in place. Now, since I want the computer folding as much as possible, I'm somewhat reluctant to turn it off to swap those fans out...

So, generally I don't. However, I've dropped wing nuts before, and they usually land on the motherboard. The result is generally that the computer reboots, because the nut shorted something that didn't like being shorted...

Anyhow, so the case is sitting on it's side on my desk, and I take the motherboard out. Under the motherboard, directly under the primary CPU socket, there's a wing nut. :banghead:

The nut must've been shorting something out... Oddly enough, it worked fine @ 1.5GHz with F@H 3.25, and @ 1.3GHz with F@H 4, but not at 1.5GHz & V4... even though the wing nut was there all along.

Go figure...

Coulda lost that motherboard very easily, along with a few other parts like RAM, CPU, and more.

Um, err, sheer luck. GOOD kind, that the thing did not short out more.

What I hate, big time, is getting a computer in someone has built, and finding themotherboard screwed DIRECTLY onto the mount plane, with no studs.

    Cyberguys. Fan screws, steel, cheap.

Cheaper yet, Lock nuts with nylon inserts, removable. Also too BIG to get under motherboard.

Yeah, I was very lucky... esp. since these boards are damn near impossible to find...

MSI Pro266TD-LR; dual P3s, tualatin support, Via Pro266, 4 DDR DIMMs, AGP, RAID, and Intel LAN. The only place I can find them anymore is Newegg's refurb section, and they've only been on there twice in the past 4 months...

    John.

lol i've seen that before myself. we also had a guy one time, instead of using the drive rails, he SOLDERED his drive into his Chieftec case. Theres a hole of fairly decent size that is right beside the 5.25" drives, it was pooled full of solder.
