need some info on reinstalling/recovering xp

edited March 2009 in Science & Tech
I am not very knowledgeable concerning computers whatsoever and my question may seem silly or obvious but here goes: I have a 4 year old dell inspiron 700m laptop and a little over a year ago I let my friend install a cracked version of vista on it. the computer originally had xp factory installed and I never shouldve had them put on vista cause the computer is really not enough to handle it. I now want to reinstall xp and had dell send me a recovery disc. My question is: can I just go through and reinstall xp or will there be some kind of complication? I dont want to have to buy xp again or have some other problem. I just basically want to know if, given my idiotic choice of installing vista, I can just follow the recovery directions and get xp back. thanks

It is my assumption, since you wrote "recovery disk," is that the CD they sent you will restore your computer to the load it contained when it was new, in other words, to recover it to the off-the-shelf state. It will most likely wipe the drive of everything that's on it. If you have data you wish to keep, you need to back it up before using the recovery media.
