Hello everyone,

A coworker of mine is looking for an open source solution for ripping DVD's to his HDD and then encoding the ripped video to iPod format.

I don't have much experience with encoding to iPod.... ok I don't have any experience encoding to iPod.

So what's a good open source solution for ripping and encoding to iPod? I know handbrake is a good piece of software for ripping DVDs, does it also do the iPod dance?

Handbrake will do what you need it to do. If he's on OSX just make sure he's got VLC installed because Handbrake uses VLC's dvd decryptor to rip copyrighted DVD's. If he's on windows then Handbrake won't do encrypted DVD's. You have to use a DVD Decryptor first.

    Yep, on a PC.

Good to know, I figured as much. Probably will need some tweaking. Thanks!

Just for reference if you are on OSX, there is an app called Squint that is great for converting any video to iPod/iPhone format. :)

    cheers :jared:
