BSOD System Will not boot at all

I have read the thread "My Fix for the STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005... BSOD / REBOOT" and my problem is similar, but the STOP numbers are different. I am running Win XP Pro SP2 on an older high-end laptop (Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi) that was kind of glitchy to begin with. I had 2 browsers (Opera and Google Chrome) with 3 or 4 tabs open in each plus my email program Win Live Mail. Then, out of the Blue (chuckle) a BSOD. I have always been able to recover from occasional BSODs, but NOT this time. System will not boot... not even to Safe Mode. When I boot, I get the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\System32\hal.dll". The BSOD code is Stop: 0x0000008E (0xc0000006, 0x80539c53, 0ka650abf0, 0x00000000). I do have an Acronis True Image Backup of the C:/ drive only a few days old, and I can use the recovery DVD and see the backup, but I don't really want to recover the whole partition except as a last resort. I have the Win XP Pro install CD... maybe I could use it to do an Install Repair. Need some help, BSOD cause info, ideas... ?

1. Try this: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp -- if it fails, move on to option #2.
2. http://icrontic.com/articles/fix-the-0x0000008e-bsod-once-and-for-all
You'll notice that a complete OS recovery is included in the steps for option #2. The point of these two articles is to gradually walk you through less severe troubleshooting options that fix more common issues to more thorough fixes that remedy more exotic issues.
