All I know is that my dad, who at 63 is just now becoming slightly computer saavy, has had vista for about a month now, and all he keeps saying is "Why doesn't this crap just work? What is this Vista? It sucks! Why did they change it from Windows?"
What he means is: He had a fundamental and basic understanding of XP, and now with Vista he has more difficulty doing the rudimentary tasks that he is used to. Also his (much newer) computer runs slower than his old one, and it crashes doing things like selecting all photos in a folder and copying them to Flickr Uploader.
None of these things happened in XP. I'm sure there are valid reasons for all of his issues, but they don't matter: What matters is that his impression of Vista is completely ruined.
And my 65 year old neighbor who I helped pick out a laptop this past winter had no issues transitioning between XP and his new Vista x64.
Everyone's experiences are different, and perceptions are colored by different stimuli.
My own personal experience very much resembled the feel of the Mojave commercials. So many conversations that started with "Man, can you believe how bad Vista sucks?" when someone found out I 'work in computers', are very quickly stopped when I respond with many of the points that Snarky and I have made in the past. When I tell them that it (at the time, I'm now using 7 100%) was my primary OS and I had very little problem, their most common response is "Really?". When I ask them if they've ever actually sat down and used it, about 80% said "no, but I don't want to 'cuz I've heard it really sucks bad".
Vista is a good OS. Unfortunately, it's just that, good. It's not great, which 7 is.
