Most sophisticated-looking virus email I've ever seen

edited January 2004 in Science & Tech
Just wanted to notify everybody that I got a very sophisticated looking fake email today. It purports to be from CitiBank, and asks that you log in to check your account for some fraud activity. However, this one looks legitimate - no bad english, no typos, etc. Just be on the lookout and DON'T CLICK THE BUTTON. See the forum thread for a screenshot of the email.

Ah! A typo! There's your proof right there.

So, what is the URL it takes you to?

    "on our system".
"in regard to these accounts" (as the acounts are still being looked at, thus not past tense).
"CitiBank notifies all of its customers" (of needed, and "all of it is customers" makes no sense).
"and asks you to check the balance of each of your accounts" (old way was badly written in general).
"or have found any fraudulent activity".
"by logging in through (possibly "via") the link below".

Actually I think it was still really badly written :rolleyes2

And you shouldn't have clicked on it if you don't bank with CitiBank :)

I'm not sure, they both seem to fit correctly, although there probably is some type of contextual law that I am not aware of.

Aranyic got one the other day. He set a point to revert back to but the IE patch that fixes the problem where urls show as something different than what they really are stopped it. So as long as you are uptodate you should be ok.

There are still 2 or 3 massively dangerous IE exploits out there which people are not afraid of trying to trick people in to using, which is basically the reason I now have Firebird set as my default browser (before I just used Firebird, now it's default). Basically for the simple reason, they are normally ActiveX exploits which nothing other than IE supports.
