Yes it does slow down the project because they dont send out the WU again until the deadline is past and then it has to be done again.

Well usually I delete them and get a Gromac. Now since I am not, I will leave it and fold the Tinker. Wouldn't it be faster to pass on the tinkers to a machine that can fold it faster? My p4 takes 48hrs to complete them both (2 consoles).

This error. I just turned off the script debugging so it was poping up in front of me every time.

Sure move it to another computer if you want but move it back so the servers will accept it. Just dont delete it.

That is a good way, yes. The latest stable client with latest stable Core_78 running is getting maybe 10% Tinkers on average, from what I can see.

Note the folding at Maximum PC and the Folding production out of our team, and how ours has an upslope recently. For a base idea of how busy Pande Groups lab servers are, notice how much production they got out of their spare processing cycles.....

Well, I prefer to think it is all the team members that have upgraded boxes and make them WORKABLY OC.

Maximum PC team has over 3 times the total members we do, and over twice as many active ones, but our team is rocking out more points per user ID than they are by almost twice as many average points per member. Conclusion, either we have one HECK of a lot more folks with more boxes each folding, or we have, overall, more faster boxes, or both. We also have the power of howto knowledge working for us.... :D

BTW, if in amonth or two the next team above us is Maximum PC mag team, I would not be surprised, Egg Roll simply has force of huge numbers going adn I would expect them to pass Maximum PC shortly. That is why I am focusing on us versus Maximum PC and left Egg Roll out of custom team graph spec.

I've also noticed the differences in number of team members. Our output per team member is quite a bit higher, which is surprising considering the focus of the magazine. The only other team that comes to mind in terms of output per members is 2cpu.com. Is Ars Tech even located in the U.S.? I know very little about them. I think I tried a link to their site from stanford but it was dead. They have been quite strong as of late. I'm still gathering thoughts on a recruiting drive. The way I wound up here was by muddock dropping by the forums on maxpc just saying hi and wishing the team luck. I dropped by here just to check it out and found a much stronger sense of community and enthusiasm. I think if more were to just drop by they would see the same and join up.

Ars Tech draws folks internationally to fold on team, as does Team S-M. Is a team located by its site or its member folders???? I would say by the latter, in reality.

The SM boxes, correct me if wrong, but I do not know they are all in the US. Even the prime movers here are an international group of folks.

We can recruit, but than we got folks who in part do not stay committed. Point them to the site from other sites if those sites do not have teams. We need committed folders, and have two choices:

Grab anyone, often and vigorously, or let those who are intereested SEE our spirit of both overall community and dedication to finding ways to destroy cancer. Those who empathize with the WHY will fold more steadily and fold more determinedly, adn those are the ones we want most.

NOTE, I am knocking the ohter, but recruiting too heavy gives wrong impression. Stealing (or appearing to steal) a folder from another team does NOT typically help the folding effort overall, but might even casue those who do not like the team rivalry outweighing the emphasis of the overall goal to find teams that do not do this.

So we have thin line to walk when recruiting. We can say to anyone who seems knowlegdgable about wanting to stress abox for testing, that we do that ourselves as well as fold with our normal boxes. We can say, if you want to check out another forum and see one site that has done a solid job of building a team, look at the S-M folding team areas on S-M. That is legit. That is an open offer.

But, pushing folks to fold and fold and always upgrade leaves folks broke too often. We can praise for doing more, but if we seem to make it a requirement, then those with slower boxes will leave. But, if encouraged and not pushed, same folks might be some of the most reliable folders our team could get.

I agree with what you say ageek. The reason I wound up here was the mere fact that muddock went into our forums and kindly introduced himself and wished maxpc luck. He made no mention of anyone coming over here or that he was there to recruit. I don't think recruiting hard is the way to go either. Part of my point earlier was echoed in your comments about getting people here to the site and forums. I also think that if they saw the sense of community here that they would find it a good place to hang and enjoy the company. That's what I saw when I checked out the site and made me want to switch teams. I think an influx of the right people would help but we wouldn't want to be too pushy or overbearing in the process of doing that. It would turn people off, possibly tarnish our reputation in the process, and even turn people off to the whole folding project in general. That's the last thing we'd want. Since it could be a sensitive issue the best way is to tread lightly while being kind and sincere in the approach. Attempting to draft people from other teams, in my opinion, is also not the right approach. The best people would ideally not already be on a team and be somewhat knowledgeable about computers. Where would we find these types of people? That's a hard one to answer and I've been pondering it for a few days already. Maybe gaming forums where people are usually quite knowledgeable about computers in general (and have high end systems to boot) but not necessarily "in the know" about distributed computing and the community around it. I think a nice introduction there with a small invitation to check out our forums wouldn't be inappropriate. It would also be the most beneficial of all because it would be bringing fresh people into folding and advancing the whole science of it. I'm still pondering it though.

Kudos to all for some very good thoughts!

I know when I think of "recruiting" it's just with an eye on the person who is not Folding at all. One of the reasons our team is fun is that we take the research seriously, but not ourselves. If someone is Folding for another team, the project as a whole benefits just as much as if they were on Team 93.

For the person who is not Folding at all, I just try to show them what a ball we are having doing it, and how they can be a part of a very meaningful humanitarian project. It's a lot of fun to see the good-natured ribbing that goes on when someone passes a teammate, or the sense of pride displayed when someone finally reaches a goal they've been chasing for months.

Well, where we have covered a topic well, we can point folks to it here, and if we want we can toss in that the team threads are open to all to read and that if you create an ID here we can answer questions and try to help. So, if you know of a fix that might help someone, one way to show community is to help if can, accept correction if proven wrong, and where our ideas have proven to work well, highlight them with links and simple hints that folks are welcome here.

You get people to respond by drawing them to what we co-operatively have built and when they see they might switch becasue we are a growing active set of folders who do so to see cancer beat. If we did not want that we would not be folding, for that research is the raesion detra of (prime motivating reason behind) folding's existence. One reason I egg others on gently is that we get a synergistic effect out of it-- it rubs off. One reason I am gentle is that folks hate to be shoved-- they react in direct proportion to what they see as the amount of shoving from their point of view.

You get folks to a forum by having ideas you discuss there that they are interested in, and ways to fix and find out what really is broke that are above the norm in how well they work. If they sympathize with folding, and see a welcoming atmosphere, they will join. If encouraged and not ridiculed as they see being ridiculed they are likely to stay. If they see content they want, they might contribute more ideas, and eventually come on board the team even if they see a continuity of ideas expressed that they like overall. We're one of the top ten teams, we do not need to descend to a beginning level of very active recruiting which can be seen as shoving to get experienced folks, but we do need to not appear to condescend too much either.

IT folks hop jobs, hop where they hang, and are humanly sensitive also. Start by showing them humans using boxes and why, and then dig in as they have issues. Fixing what caused a folding problem can be a local fix and improve other things on box that they use box for. Competition will never be dropped out totally, Folding uses points to help spur folks on to more folding. But fix might not relate to folding client or servers there at all-- it might fix several things at once to help them troubleshoot boxes. So, if someone is getting no help, summarize answer to issue we found worked, and then give a link to discussion so they can see some of why it worked if they want. If we have an article, link to thT if it hitsa their problem with a fix or a guide on howto fix what sysmptoms and what did not fix says remains as likely thing. This site has burgeoned in content in forums by a huge amount because we care about each other's problems enough to try and help and not judge too much when someone lacks knowledge. You and I have both been around many experience blocks(miles of them), and we know deep understanding comes best when new idea stuff is related to what they know and can build on that.

So, soft sell as you were soft-sold, some will respond. Others will sell harder and get others to at least look in on us, some of them. Impressions count, but do not get commitment, it takes results also to do that and we know how to make boxes fold in a very solid manner, so lets sell that by example.
